INDIANAPOLIS -- With the 2009-10 college basketball season approaching, both men's and women's GLVC Basketball Preseason Coaches Polls have been released by the conference office. The Greyhound men's squad, led by second year head coach
Stan Gouard, garnered 16 points in the GLVC East Division voting to finish fifth among a division that features perennial powers Bellarmine, Northern Kentucky, Kentucky Wesleyan, and Southern Indiana. Coach LeAnn Freeland's women's team received 11 of 15 first-place votes to top the East division with 63 points, eight more than second-place Northern Kentucky.
On the men's side, Bellarmine (64 pts), who was selected No. 1 in
The Sporting News preseason poll, was picked as the top team in the East after receiving 12 of the 15 first-place votes. Northern Kentucky (52) tallied the final three first-place votes and was tabbed second in the East, while Kentucky Wesleyan (35) and Southern Indiana (33) rounded out the division ahead of UIndy.
Quincy (59) was selected tops among the North Division after collecting nine first-place votes and finishing five points ahead of Lewis (54). Rockhurst (65) led the voting in the West Division after receiving 13 first-place nods, while second place Drury (50) received the final two.
The Greyhound men will look to improve upon their 9-18 record from a season ago, returning one starter in
Larry Woods, who averaged 10.3 points and 3.5 rebounds during the 2008-09 campaign. Coach Gouard's squad will rely heavily on newcomers, including junior college transfers
Darius Adams and
DeWann Squires, Division I transfers
Nate Blank,
Andrew Parrish and
Ryan Sims and freshmen
Alec Dye and
Brian Johnson.

In the women's poll, Northern Kentucky (55) finished second in the voting behind UIndy in the East Divison, receiving the remaning four first-place votes. Bellarmine (37) was tabbed third in the division ahead of Southern Indiana (29) and Kentucky Wesleyan (15).
A trio of teams in the North Division earned first-place votes, with Quincy (58) leading the way with eight. Lewis (52) and Wisconsin-Parkside (49) were not far behind as the Flyers collected four first-place votes and the Rangers the remaining three in the conference's tightest ballot.
Drury (66) was selected as the top team in the West, receiving the maximum 14 first-place votes. Missouri S&T (52) received the remaining vote while Missouri-St. Louis (36) was selected to finish thrid.
After a 24-10 record last season and the program's first ever NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, Coach Freeland will look to take the Greyhounds even deeper into the NCAA tournament this season. Indianapolis, ranked fourth in the
Division II Bulletin Preason Poll, will return four starters from last year's squad and hvae nine players returning to form a solid nucleus.
This year's women's squad will feature four seniors in
Katie Dewey,
Jessica Canary,
Sarah Fenneman, and
Heather Rourk. Junior All-GLVC honoree
Samantha Meissel also returns, a year after setting the Greyhound single-season scoring record with 581 points in her sophomore campaign.

Both UIndy squads will open with an exhibition doubleheader at Valparaiso on November 1. The men will conclude their exhibition schedule with a trip to Terre Haute on November 7 to take on Indiana State, while the women will travel to Notre Dame on November 3 and then round out their exhibition slate with a visit to Cincinnati when they face Xavier on November 7.
