Defense keys win over defending-NCAA champs

INDIANAPOLIS-  Behind a double-double from point guard Darius Adams, the Greyhound men's basketball team defeated fourth-ranked Findlay, 71-63 at Nicoson Hall Saturday night.  UF (2-1) had its 38-game winning streak snapped in the process, its first loss since the 2007-08 season.

Adams scored a game-high 19 points and also collected a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with five assists to aid the hard-working Greyhound effort.  The junior transfer scored 13 points in the second half alone, including four free throws in the final minute to ice the game.

UIndy (2-1) had four players score in double digits with DeWann Squires pouring-in 18, Larry Woods adding 14 and Nate Blank with 10.  Findlay's Nathan Hyde had 18 points, but had just six in the second half and did not score from deep after hitting 4-of-5 in the opening period.

The key run came in the second stanza, a five-minute stretch where the Oilers were held without a field goal.  Trailing by a single point at the 11:09 mark, the Greyhounds rattled-off 10 straight points and later stretched their lead to as many as 10.  Findlay forced turnovers on two straight possessions and scored to whittle the advantage down to 61-57 with 2:20 left.  The teams traded missed shots, then Woods converted on a conventional three-point play with 51 seconds remaining, powering his way to the bucket and hitting the free-throw for a comfortable seven-point cushion.

The Hounds hung on to snap the defending-champs' long win streak and marked the first win over a ranked opponent since Jan. 18, 2007, a 68-63 over No. 9 Quincy.

UIndy will travel to Urbana Tuesday in the final tune-up before the start of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season.  The Hounds will welcome Northern Kentucky to Nicoson Hall Dec. 3 to open league play.

Notes:  Findlay went 36-0 through the 2009-10 season en route to the D-II title ... The Oilers were ranked fourth in the Preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches Coaches Poll.
