INDIANAPOLIS- Fresh off cracking the top ten for the first time since Feb. 2003, the UIndy women's basketball team handed visiting Central State a 91-60 loss at Nicoson Hall Tuesday night. UIndy, who earned a No. 10 ranking in the
USA Today/ESPN D-II Coaches Poll released today, scored the game's first 17 points and didn't look back, notching its third win in as many games this year. Junior
Katie Lyons set a personal high with 19 points in the win.
Lyons and fellow frontcourt player
Samantha Meissel combined to shot an efficient 21-of-26 from the field as the Greyhounds were able to take advantage of the smaller Marauders, especially in the post.
With Lyons earning good position on the right low block, UIndy set the tone early, feeding the 6-1 New Palestine, Ind. native down low on its first three possessions.
The Hounds kept the pressure on defensively as well, forcing five CSU turnovers before the visitors got on the scoreboard.
More than six minutes in, the Marauders (1-1) finally broke the seal with a pair of made free throws at the 13:47 mark. It did little to slow the UIndy momentum, however, as the Greyhounds' score remained at least twice that of their opponents' throughout the first half.
UIndy led 46-21 at the break with a whopping 32 points coming in the paint. The slew of bunnies helped the Hounds out-shoot Central State 64.5% to 26.9% before intermission.
The visitors had more success in the second half, as the final margin was only six points higher than that of the halftime tally. Central State forced 14 UIndy turnovers in the latter period, thanks in part to a second-half instituted press.
UIndy still shoot over 50%, however, by continuing to cash in down low. All told, the Greyhounds finished the game with 60 points in the paint to equal the Marauders' total output.
Meissel racked up game highs in both points (26) and rebounds (7),
Katie Dewey went 2-for-3 from downtown on the way to 10 points, eight assists and five steals, and
Hillary Wenning added nine points and three boards.
Indianapolis (3-0) continues is eventful holiday week by hosting the four-team UIndy Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday. The Hounds take on Oakland City at 5:30 p.m. Friday before a Saturday contest versus Lake Superior State, also at 5:30 p.m. The remaining schedule of the event includes a LSSU/Illinois-Springfield match-up Friday at 7 p.m. and an Ill.-Springfield/Oakland City contest at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Note: UIndy's last appearance in the coaches poll top ten came Feb. 26 2003, when it earned the No. 9 ranking.
