INDIANAPOLIS- The 10th-ranked UIndy women’s basketball team held visiting Oakland City to just 4-of-19 shooting in the first half on the way to a 93-39 rout in the first game of the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic Friday night at Nicoson Hall.  Freshman Nickole Gonser (Coal City, Ind./Owen Valley) racked up seven steals and three assists to go with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Oaks’ first-half point total of 12 was the lowest by a Greyhound opponent since Jan. 8 2007 when the Hounds allowed just 12 points at Missouri-St. Louis, a game UIndy won by just eight.  The margin of victory was bigger Friday, however, as Indianapolis followed a 51-point first half with a 42-point output in the second -- each sum being more than Oakland City managed the entire 40 minutes.

Oakland City (1-2) used a conventional three-point play to take an early 5-4 lead two minutes in, but it was all Greyhounds from there, as the home team scored 20 unanswered, capped by a three-pointer from Jessica Canary (Coatesville, Ind./South Putnam).

The Hounds’ point total reached 51 before the first half buzzer, thanks to an efficient 60% shooting performance (18-for-30) from the floor.

Later, the UIndy lead touched 50 when a Samantha Meissel (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) layup made it 69-19 with 13:47 left in the game.  The margin did not dip below 44 the rest of the way, with UIndy allowing just 37 shot attempts the whole game while forcing almost as many turnovers (34).

Meissel was the game’s high scorer, as the all-region forward finished with 19 points on the night.  Frontcourt mates Katie Lyons (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Sarah Fenneman (Evansville, Ind./F.J. Reitz) combined for 26 points.  Lyons hit on 7-of-13 FG attempts on the way to 15 points and Fenneman notched seven of her 11 at the foul line.

Friday’s other game featured GLVC-newcomer Illinois-Springfield and GLIAC member Lake Superior State, with the latter taking a 87-62 win.

The four teams return to Nicoson Hall for round two Saturday.  UIndy (4-0) takes on LSSU at 5:30 p.m. EST before a 7:30 p.m. tip between Ill.-Springfield and Oakland City.
