UIndy women improve to 5-0

Box score

INDIANAPOLIS- The 10th-ranked UIndy women's basketball team improved to 5-0 for the third straight season with a 68-55 win Saturday night versus Lake Superior State in the final day of the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic at Nicoson Hall.  The Greyhounds more than doubled the scoring of the Lakers in the opening half, thanks in part to 18 first-half points from Jessica Canary.

The Greyhounds picked apart the Lakers' 2-3 zone with good inside-out ball movement.  Canary was the Hounds' biggest beneficiary, as the six-foot guard knocked down four of five three-point attempts on the way to 18 points before halftime.

The Hounds went on the build a 36-15 advantage at the break, holding the visitors to just 6-of-21 shooting in the first 20 minutes.

Though Canary took just two shots in the second half, the Greyhounds got plenty of production from Samantha Meissel in the latter period.  After Canary scored 18 in the first half, Meissel accounted for 18 of UIndy's 32 second-half points.

LSSU (1-1) actually out-scored the Greyhounds in the final 20 minutes but never managed to get the deficit below double digits.

The Greyhounds finished with a season-high 10 made three-pointers, with four coming from Canary and two each from Meissel and Megan Gardner.

Meissel led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting.  Canary supplemented her 18 points with six rebounds and three steals, Katie Lyons had eight points and two blocks, and Cayla Keegan contributed a career-high six assists to go with three steals.

In the nightcap, Illinois-Springfield and Oakland City hooked up in the last of four games at the Classic.  The contest featured 51 turnovers and 45 fouls, with UIS coming out on top 75-66.

UIndy opens conference play Dec. 3 in the first of two games versus division-rival Northern Kentucky.  The Norse are currently ranked 15th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll.  Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
