DeWann Squires dumped-in a career-best 45 points as the host Greyhounds cruised to a 110-83 victory over Cincinnati Christian at Nicoson Hall Tuesday night in non-conference action. Squires blistered the nets, converting on a whopping 19-of-24 from the floor, part of five Hounds to reach double figures in scoring.
Squires made 7-of-10 first-half shots to amass 19 points heading into the break to lead all players. The teams combined to launch 34 shots from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes and the Greyhounds led 57-41 at the half. Squires missed just two shots in the second half, going 12-of-14 from the floor. With
Larry Woods in street clothes due to injury and
Sergey Struck in foul trouble, Squires was pressed into playing more minutes, obliging by posting an outstanding overall effort that saw him grab seven rebounds, notch three steals and two blocks. His point total was just seven shy of the UIndy single-game record, a 52-point outburst from Gary Paul back in the 1987-88 season.
While Squires was the story, he did not steal the show. There were several highlight plays in the win, including several eye-opening dunks.
Ryan Sims had the first after running the floor and firing down a vicious two-hander in the first half. Not to be outdone, Devin Williams sliced through the Eagle defense through the lane and skied over the final defender to hammer down a ferious slam in the second half, part of his 10 points.
All told, UIndy made 65.6 percent of its shots in the second half and 59.7 percent for the game. The scoring output was the most of the Coach
Stan Gouard era, and first 100-point game since the season opener last year.
CCU (6-4) made just 6-of-26 shots from long range, but benefited by getting to the free throw line 34 times, making 29 (85.3 percent). Joe Mendenhall scored 24 to lead the Eagles in the loss.
Darius Adams scored 23, Sims had 13 and
Nate Blank and Williams each scored 10 for the Greyhounds.
UIndy (4-3) will continue its season-long six-game homestand Saturday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. tilt against Lake Erie College at Nicoson Hall.
