MELBOURNE, Fla.- Fresh off moving up to fourth in the latest
USA TODAY ESPN Division II Poll, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team (8-0) garnered a 75-62 road win versus Florida Tech at the Clemente Center Tuesday night. UIndy received big statistical contributions from a host of players, including a career-high 37-point output from junior
Samantha Meissel.
In just their second road game of the season, it took the Greyhounds all of three minutes to build a 13-2 lead. The rally was fueled by the long ball, as Meissel knocked down an early three and senior
Katie Dewey followed with two more.
Tech regrouped quickly, however, as the home team used a 10-0 run help knot it at 15-all.
Despite their efforts, the Panthers never led in the contest, as the Hounds built a cushion that would last the remainder of the half and ultimately the rest of the night.
After the game's one and only tie came with 10:30 left in the half, Tech managed to keep it a one-possession game until Dewey drilled her third triple of the half to make it 26-21 Hounds with just under six minutes to play. UIndy slowly stretched the lead until the first-half buzzer stopped play with the score 38-29 UIndy, shortly after a steal and a lay-up from sophomore
Cayla Keegan.
The UIndy lead climbed to double digits when
Jessica Canary hit a 3-pointer early in the second to make it 41-31. The Panthers went toe-to-toe with the talented Greyhounds the rest of the way, keeping the margin at no higher than 11 until the very end, but Tech would could not get closer than six to fall to 5-4 on the year.
Junior Lynisha Nelson, who led the Panthers with 24 points, hit a three with 1:17 remaining to make to 69-62 Hounds, but Dewey and Canary each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to ice it for Indianapolis.
Meissel finished 15-for-22 from the field to notch her third career 30-point game. Her point total matched the third-highest single-game sum in program history, two short of the record of 39 points, held by Liz Ramsey (1/7/99 at IPFW).
One game after scoring a personal-best 22 points,
Katie Dewey continued to raise her scoring average with a 17-point effort Tuesday. The Franklin Central grad is now averaging over 10 points per contest, one of four Greyhounds averaging double figures on the early season.
Canary came just two rebounds shy of a triple-double by compiling 11 points, 11 assists and eight boards. The senior guard, who also had three blocks, managed her seventh career double-double and the first points-assists double-double by a Greyhound since Mandy Geryak turned the trick in February of 2006.
UIndy continues its holiday stay in Florida, heading down I-95 for a match-up with undefeated Lynn University (7-0) Friday afternoon. Tip time from the de Hoernle Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
