INDIANAPOLIS-
The No. 8 University of Indianapolis women's basketball team snapped a 10-game series losing streak at the hands of Northern Kentucky, remained undefeated on the young season, and opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a win with its 59-53 victory over the No. 20 Norse at Nicoson Hall Thursday night.
The Norse (3-2, 0-1 GLVC) came out of the gates in control, with UIndy (6-0, 1-0 GLVC) holding the lead once in the first half, at 2-0 to open the game. Northern Kentucky led by as many as a dozen in the opening half, and closed the period with a 29-26 advantage.
Katie Lyons led all scorers in the first half with nine.
Samantha Meissel ignited the Greyhound offense in the second 20 minutes of play, scoring 13 of her team-high 15 in the second half.
After leading by as many as eight in the second half, the Greyhounds found themselves tied with the Norse, 50-50 at the 2:36 mark. Meissel knocked down a three coming out of a UIndy timeout to put the Greyhounds back on top for good. The Norse cut the UIndy lead to two with 24 seconds on the clock, but would get no closer as the Greyhounds held on for the 59-53 win.
Meissel's 15 led UIndy, while Lyons and
Jessica Canary each added 10 for the Greyhounds. Canary's six rebounds led on the boards for UIndy. NKU got 17 points from Rachel Lantry and eight rebounds from Kendra Caldwell.
UIndy hosts IU-Northwest Saturday night at 7:00 at Nicoson Hall, before taking a week off for final exams.
