INDIANAPOLIS- The fourth-ranked UIndy women's basketball team made it ten straight with a 76-43 win against visiting Christian Brothers Wednesday afternoon. The Greyhound defense forced 32 turnovers by the Lady Buccaneers, helping up their average margin of victory on the year to nearly 25 points per contest.
The Lady Bucs (8-3) took advantage of a slow start from the Greyhounds, jumping out to a 9-2 lead through four minutes of play. The Hounds (10-0) had just a single turnover in that span but sank only one of their first seven field goal attempts.
The offense eventually got rolling as
Samantha Meissel hit layups on back-to-back possessions to end the Buccaneer run. The buckets sparked a Greyhound rally that saw the home team score 16 unanswered to take control of the game.
Katie Dewey was responsible for half to the points during the game-changing spurt, as the senior guard hit three jumpers in a span 90 seconds. Two of the shots were from 3-point range, with the first giving the Greyhounds the lead for good.
After allowing nine points in the opening four minutes, the Greyhounds surrendered just nine more the rest of the half to take a 31-18 advantage into the locker room. Meissel led the way with 10 points in 13 first-half minutes.
Senior
Jessica Canary opened the second half with a three to up the margin to 16, but the Lady Bucs orchestrated their second 9-2 run of the game to get within striking distance. The UIndy lead slowly climbed from that point, however, reaching 15 on another Canary triple with 11-and-a-half to go, and later surpassing 20 on a pair of
Katie Lyons free throws at the eight-minute mark.
Nineteen of Christian Brothers' 32 turnovers came in the latter period, leading directly to 24 UIndy points. The Hounds also benefited from their efficiency at the foul line by shooting at a season-high .818 clip (18-for-22).
Three Greyhounds reached double figures in points, with Meissel scoring 15, Canary adding 12 and Lyons chipping in 10. Dewey amassed nine points, a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, while freshman
Heather Gonser garnered eight points and a personal-best four steals.
UIndy resumes GLVC play this weekend in a showdown of the conference's lone-remaining unbeatens. The Hounds host 12th-ranked and North-Division-leading Quincy (10-0, 2-0 GLVC) Saturday at 1 p.m. in the opener of a men's and women's doubleheader at Nicoson Hall.
Notes: Coach LeAnn Freeland's first team at UIndy (2007-08) started 11-0 before garnering its first loss, setting the program record for wins to start a season…all ten Greyhounds had at least three points, one rebound and one assist.
