INDIANAPOLIS- Powered by a career-high 22 points from senior
Katie Dewey, the eighth-ranked UIndy women's basketball team remained unbeaten by handing IU Northwest an 88-32 loss at Nicoson Hall Saturday night. Dewey set another personal high with four three-pointers, part of a 7-for-13 overall effort from the floor.
Though the Greyhounds did not get the tip, it took all of nine seconds for the home team to get on the board after sophomore
Cayla Keegan earned a quick steal and a bucket. UIndy (7-0) went on to record the first 11 points of the game, capped by a lay-up from
Katie Lyons.
Dewey answered the first Red Hawks' basket with a three-pointer, her first of three in the first half. Indianapolis hit eight of its first 12 field goals, part of a 22-2 game-opening rally.
The Greyhound defense clamped down on the visiting Red Hawks, including their to-go option, sophomore Sharon Houston. Houston, who came in averaging nearly 23 points and 14 rebounds per game, scored the first seven points for IUN, but finished the half with nine points on just 4-for-12 shooting.
Meanwhile, Dewey fueled the UIndy attack with 15 points in the first twenty minutes, leading the Hounds to a 44-19 lead at the break. Her first-half output alone was good enough to tie her previous career high of 15, set last season at Southern Indiana (1/4/09).
Indianapolis continued to extend the lead throughout the second half, hitting 40 at the 13:41 mark and 50 with just over four minutes left. UIndy allowed just six made field goals in each half, as IUN shot a mere 25% (12-of-48) for the game.
Dewey tacked on five assists, four rebounds and three steals to her stat line. Junior starting forwards Lyons and
Samantha Meissel combined for 23 points and eight boards, freshman
Nickole Gonser just missed her second collegiate double-double in her young career by amassing 10 points and nine rebounds, while her twin sister
Heather Gonser also added 10 points, her first time in double figures.
Houston led the Red Hawks (5-5) with 12 points, five rebounds and seven blocks.
Saturday marked the Hounds' final home game for three-and-a-half weeks. UIndy travels to Florida for a pair of winter-break contests in the Sunshine State. The ladies face Florida Tech Dec. 15, followed by a contest at Lynn University Dec. 18.
Notes: Saturday's result featured the largest margin of victory for the Hounds since beating Fisher (Mass.) 110-25 on 12/30/04…all 11 Greyhounds had at least three rebounds…UIndy has now started 7-0 in three straight seasons.
