Anticipation surrounds women's golf team

INDIANAPOLIS – With its championship season just around the corner, the University of Indianapolis women's golf team is primed to make this spring one of the most memorable in program history. The Greyhounds head into the 2009 calendar year with a No. 11 ranking in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II Coaches' Poll.

UIndy is led by an all-conference trio of upperclassmen in senior Kristi Piepenbrink and juniors Lyndsay McBride and Sarah Prascsak.

Piepenbrink finished in the top three in four of five fall events and currently owns a 73.67 strokes-per-round average, good for second in the Golfstat Cup D-II standings.

After a breakout sophomore season, McBride has played herself into All-American status as her 76.33 average holds down the No. 15 ranking.

Prascsak, the medalist at last summer's Fort Wayne Women's City Golf Championship, maintains a solid 78.7 average this year after finishing 15th at the 2008 NCAA DII Women's Golf Championship.

The six-woman team is rounded out by a supporting cast capable of stepping up during any given round. Junior Ashley Seaton, sophomore Allison Tyler and freshman Darin Pinnick have each shown the ability to produce scores in the mid-70s and are working hard to achieve the consistancy of the top three.

Seaton has improved her scoring average each year and has a low round of 75 to her credit. Tyler and Pinnick have both contributed to the team's success this season by carding matching low rounds of 76.

The team's stellar performance on the links is overshadowed by its success in the classroom. For the past three years, Indianapolis has ranked first or second among all Division II women's golf programs in cumulative grade point average, while also appearing in the top ten among all colleges and universities in that category. This year's squad has complied a 3.6 team GPA, good for the highest of any UIndy athletics team.

The Greyhounds open their championship season at the Florida Southern Lady Moc Classic in Lakeland, Fla. Mar. 2-3.
