Fornal, Irwin punch tickets for Nationals

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.- A pair of UIndy wrestlers earned themselves a trip to trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships in two weeks at the NCAA Super Regional 2 Sunday. Juniors Matt Irwin and Cory Fornal both qualified for the championships via their second-place finishes at the regional level.

Irwin, the No. 2 seed in the 141 bracket, falling in the championship bout to top-seeded Mario Morgan of Nebraska-Omaha in a 12-2 major decision. This will be Irwin's second trip to nationals, as he made the trip as a freshman too. Overall, Irwin went 3-1 on the day and had one fall and improved his season record to 32-6.

Fornal finished second in the 157 bracket as the No. 6 seed. He lost in a 22-7, 3:42 tech fall to No. 1-seed Todd Meneely of Nebraska-Omaha in the championship after going 3-1 on the day. This will be Fornal's first trip to nationals, after he posted a record of 21-12.

Four other Greyhounds placed on the day, but outside the top four in their brackets. No. 4-seeded Ethan Harris finished fifth in the 133 class, posting a record of 3-2 on the day, while six-seeded David Lopez took sixth in the 149 bracket, going 2-3 on the day. Sam Johnson, the No. 6 seed in the 197 class, went 1-3 on the day and took sixth place, while five-seeded Lynn Panko took sixth in the 285 weight class, going 1-3 on the day.

As a team, UIndy amassed 52 points to take seventh in the nine-team event. Nebraska-Omaha ran away with the team title, racking up 162.5 total points with five individual champions.

The NCAA Division II wrestling championships will take part Mar. 13-14 as a part of the DII Winter Festival in Houston, Texas.
