COLUMBUS, Ind.- All five Greyhounds shot even par or better Friday to lift the UIndy men's golf team to its second straight and record 13th Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, as the team's record-breaking 54-hole score of 864 topped the 12-team field by 20 strokes. In the event held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., three Hounds finished in the top five, led by individual medalist
Justin Hueber.
Though they came just short of breaking their own league record for largest margin of victory – 23 strokes set at last year's conference championship – the Greyhounds did set a couple of GLVC tourney benchmarks. The team's 54-hole score of 864 marked the lowest winning score since the league went to the three-round format, besting the old mark of 869 set by the 1997-98 Greyhounds.
Hueber's seven-stroke win also set a new league record for the largest winning margin for an individual. UIndy's All-American can now stake claim to two GLVC individual medals, as he also took the honor last season.
Hueber began the tournament with a three-under 69 in the opening round to lead the 60-man field. He followed that with an even-par second round to finish the first day tied for the lead with Bellarmine's Eric Meier.
Sophomore
Blair Webb highlighted his effort Thursday with a first-round 71 (-1), as he headed into Friday tied for third overall.
With the threat of rain looming all day Friday, the five-man UIndy team orchestrated an impressive performance to turn its seven-stroke lead into a 20-stroke rout. Not a single Greyhound shot over par on the day, led by a 67 (-5) from junior
Seth Fair.
Fair parlayed his final-round heroics into an All-GLVC nod, joining Hueber and Webb as top-five finishers.
Senior
Kyle Pearson rebounded from an opening-round 82 with a 72 in the second round and a two-under 70 Friday to tie for 12th place. Freshman
Aaron Monson fired a 71 (-1) in the third round to finish with a 54-hole score of 227, good for a share of 17th.
UIndy has one final tourney to prep for the NCAA Super Regional May 5. The Hounds and the rest of the region's teams flock to Noblesville, Ind. for the third and final Midwest Regional at Purgatory Golf Course Apr. 19-20.
