MEN'S GOLF: All five Greyhounds shot even par or better Friday to lift the 12th-ranked UIndy men's golf team to its second straight and record 14th Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, as the team's record-breaking 54-hole score of 864 topped the 12-team field by 20 strokes. In the event held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., three Hounds finished in the top five, led by medalist
Justin Hueber, whose seven-stroke win set a new league record for the largest winning margin for an individual. UIndy's All-American can now stake claim to two GLVC individual medals, as he also took the honor last season. Indianapolis has one final tourney to prep for the NCAA Super Regional May 5. The Hounds and the rest of the region's teams flock to Noblesville, Ind. for the third and final Midwest Regional at Purgatory Golf Course Apr. 19-20.
SOFTBALL: The Greyhound softball squads picked up another four GLVC wins on the weekend, posting doubleheader, shutout sweeps of both Drury and Rockhurst. UIndy(23-13, 14-4 GLVC) bested Drury with identical 8-0, 8-0 scores in five innings each for Senior Day Saturday, and came back Easter Sunday to defeat Rockhurst 5-0 and 8-0.
Megan Russell and
Amanda Wendlinger each earned a pair of wins in the circle on the weekend for the Greyhounds, with Russell also batting at a .500 clip during the four games and hammering three homeruns. UIndy will step outside of GLVC play this week for a doubleheader with Hillsdale Thursday afternoon at Indiana Central Little League. First pitch is slated for 3:00. The Greyhounds will then make the trip to Saint Joseph's for a GLVC twinbill Saturday.
TRACK & FIELD: The UIndy women's track and field squad won its 15th consecutive Little State team title during the weekend, and the men's team took second by just ten points at the annual meet held this year at Indiana Wesleyan. The Greyhound women earned the team crown with 157.50 points, 54 points more than its nearest competition. In addition to taking the team title, the UIndy women also took both the women's athlete of the year awards, with Nichelle Curtis being named the Women's Track Athlete of the Year and Amy Schmitz taking the honor for the field athletes.
Craig Myers,
Seth Galloway and
Courtney Kuzmicz all improved upon their previous NCAA provisional marks at the meet. UIndy will head to a pair of meets this weekend, traveling to the EKU Open at Eastern Kentucky University Friday and the Dave Rankin Invite at Purdue University Saturday.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Fresh off cracking the top ten in the Golf World/NGCA Division II Poll, the UIndy women's golf team placed fifth among 11 teams at the D-I heavy Ladies Midwest Shootout at Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. Saturday. The field featured eight NCAA Division I squads and seven in-state schools to account for the 64 individual particiaptes. UIndy junior
Lyndsay McBride (76-77) led the squad by tying for seventh individually, marking her seventh top-ten finish of the year. With the GLVC Championship nearing, the Hounds head to Indy's west side for the St. Francis Invite at Brickyard Crossing Saturday and Sunday.
BASEBALL: The UIndy baseball team (27-14, 15-5 GLVC) split a tough series with division rival Northern Kentucky this weekend to remain atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division standings. Three of the four games were low-scoring, one-run affairs as the UIndy pitching staff, led by junior
Cory White, pitched in big innings all weekend long. White tossed a complete-game three hitter in Sunday's slim 2-1 win to up his record to a spotless 6-0 on the season. The Greyhounds remain in division play with a four-game tilt at Saint Joseph's this weekend. The talented Pumas have won nine of 11 and hope to move up in the tight GLVC East race.
MEN'S TENNIS: UIndy split a pair of GLVC matches during the week, falling 7-2 at the hands of Northern Kentucky Tuesday before rebounding for an 8-1 win against Southern Indiana Saturday, clinching a berth in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. UIndy (12-9, 5-3 GLVC) will either be the four or five seed in the eight-team tournament on Apr. 24-25.
Taylor Broda was the lone Greyhound to record wins in both matches, as he was the only UIndy winner against NKU. UIndy recorded wins at all six singles positions and two of the three doubles matches in the defeat of USI Saturday. The Greyhounds have added a pair of matches to their upcoming schedule. UIndy plays at Saint Joseph's Wednesday in a non-conference match before Saturday's league finale at Bellarmine. The final tuneup will be Apr. 21 at Tiffin before the Apr. 24-25 league championships in St. Louis, Mo.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The women's tennis squad also split matches with NKU and USI during the week, losing to the Norse 8-1 and beating Southern Indiana 7-2. UIndy (9-9, 4-4 GLVC) got a pair of singles wins and a doubles win from
Meghan Teunis on the week, with the freshman winning the only match for UIndy against NKU, 6-3,6-4 at No. 4 singles. Teunis now carries a 14-5 singles record on the year, and is 7-1 in GLVC play. The Greyhounds won all three doubles matches and five of the singles matches in their win against USI Saturday, and need just one more GLVC win to ensure a berth in the upcoming league tournament. UIndy finishes up its regular season schedule next weekend with trips to Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
