Pumas take one from Greyhounds

Game two to be continued Sunday

Box score
SJC 8, UIndy 5

RENSSELAER, Ind.- UIndy and Saint Joseph's played 17 innings of baseball Friday, only completing one game, though. The host Pumas (26-13, 10-7 GLVC) took game one of a four-game series 8-5, before game two of the day was called due to darkness after eight innings with a 5-5 score.

GAME 1  (9 inn.)
After UIndy  starter Jordan Tiegs struck out the side in the bottom of the first, the Hounds (27-15, 15-6 GLVC) got on the scoreboard with a three-run second inning.  Ben Sondgeroth led off the frame with his team-leading seventh homerun of the season.  Andrew Armour followed with a walk before back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases with nobody out.

Travis Kempton became the fifth straight Greyhound to reach safely as his infield single to drive in Armour. The rally fizzled from that point, however, as a strikeout, a fielder's choice and a caught stealing combined to plate just one additional run.

With the score still 3-0, the Pumas got one back in the third on a sacrifice fly.  Later with the bases loaded and two down, Tiegs came up with a big strikeout to end the inning and escape further damage.

Later, Sondgeroth (pictured) staked the Hounds to a 5-1 advantage with his second bomb of the day, this time with a two-run shot in the top of the fifth.  Undeterred, the home Pumas answered with six big ones in the bottom half to earn their first lead of the day.

SJC started the inning with four straight singles to chase Tiegs.  Ryan Burlas came on to give up a walk and an RBI single before inducing double-play grounder.  But with two down, Saint Joseph's leadoff man Nate Weglarz punctuated the onslaught with a two-run homer to left center.

St. Joseph's insurance run in the seventh marked the end of the game's scoring.  Burlas (2-2) took the loss by allowing three earned runs in three innings pitched.  Tiegs got a no-decision with a line of eight hits, five earned runs, and six Ks in four-plus innings of work.

Sondgeroth's two-homer game is his second as a Greyhound, as the DH also hit a pair in a GLVC Tournament win versus Southern Indiana last season.  Justin Russell matched Sondgeroth's three hits while adding a run, an RBI and a stolen base.  Kempton went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

GAME 2  (8 inn., to be continued)
Indianapolis again jumped put to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second.  Erik Rieker picked up the only RBI in that span with a single up the middle to score Travis Capps.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Pumas tied it in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-run single and a sac fly.

Down 5-3 in the sixth, UIndy strung together three singles to load 'em up with just one out.  Russell knotted the game with a base knock, scoring former high school teammates Adam Rusche and Andrew Armour.

The teams fought on through eight innings, but the contest was called due to darkness after eight complete. Game two will resume at noon EST Sunday, prior to the second doubleheader of the series.

Notes:  Sondgeroth's seventh and eighth dinger each set a new career high…Danny Collier pitched a scoreless ninth in game one . . . Vince Saisi tossed three innings of scoreless ball in game two, one-hitting the Pumas over his three frames of work.
