NOBLESVILLE, Ind- The University of Indianapolis men's golf team placed second at the year's third and final Midwest Regional Sunday and Monday with team scores of 293 and 311. The rain-soaked 19-team event took place at Purgatory Golf Club in nearby Noblesville, Ind.
The elements played a big role in the tournament's outcome. The 93 golfers faced a 7,000-plus yard course while being subjected to wet conditions throughout the two-day event, including an unpleasant wind chill in the upper 30s Monday.
UIndy senior
Justin Hueber, who finished fifth with a two-day score of 147, carded Monday's second-lowest score with a two-over 74. Hueber notched birdies on both the 17th and 18th, part of a one-under back nine.
No other Greyhound finished in the top 13, however. Senior
Kyle Pearson positioned himself well with an even-par round Sunday, but a score of 80 Monday dropped him into a tie for 14th. Junior
Seth Fair and freshman
Aaron Monson shared 18th place with a two-day score of 153, and sophomore
Blair Webb tied for 33rd place by going for 74 and 81.
Indianapolis was topped only by Ferris State (286-312), whose team score of 598 bettered the Hounds' by six strokes. The Bulldogs had two players tie for second, but it was Findlay's Michael Schmitmeyer (68-77) who took medalist's honors.
UIndy gets a week off from competition before heading to the NCAA D-II Super Regional May 4-6. The Hounds, who are currently ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Region, will travel to Allendale, Mich. to compete for the right to go to the NCAA Finals in Blaine, Wash. May 19-22.
Notes: Hueber has now placed in the top five in 10 of the year's 12 tournaments...None of the field's 19 teams shot as well Monday as they did Sunday.
