Greyhounds deliver in extras, win 30th

Box score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.- The University of Indianapolis baseball team racked-up its 30th victory of the season with an extra-inning 7-6 win versus Southern Illinois Edwardsville at Roy Lee Field Thursday night.  Junior Chase Kittinger drove in the game winner in the top of the 10th inning before junior David Early worked a perfect bottom half to earn the save.

After scoring three runs in the seventh, the Greyhounds (30-16) carried a slim 6-5 advantage into the bottom of the eighth, but the host Cougars squeaked out a run to eventually force extras.

Freshman Kenny Fedrick led off the 10th with a single, but was later cut down at third on a fielder's choice from Justin Russell.  Thanks in part to an SIUE error, Russell would wind up at third with two down, putting the potential game-winning run 90 feet away.

Facing a 1-1 count, Kittinger, the Greyhounds' catcher and three-hole hitter, slapped his third single of the night to stake Indianapolis to a 7-6 lead.

UIndy head coach Gary Vaught trusted the ball to veteran reliever David Early for the bottom of the tenth.  Early needed just eight pitches to get two fly balls and a pop to close the door on any hope of a Cougar comeback.

UIndy used a parade of arms against the Division-I Cougars.  Six Greyhounds toed the rubber on the night, all for less than three innings.  Senior Travis Kempton came on prior to Early to earn the win with one run allowed and four Ks in 2.2 innings pitched.

UIndy has just eight games left in the regular season, starting with a four-game tilt versus Wisconsin-Parkside this weekend.  First pitch from Greyhound Park Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Note:  Coach Vaught needs just two victories to become the first UIndy head coach in any sport to win 500 games.
