INDIANAPOLIS-  The Greyhounds needed a pair of wins Saturday to give Head Baseball Coach Gary Vaught his 500th at the school.  They achieved that and more with a record-breaking day, winning 31-7 and 11-4 in a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday.  UIndy set new marks for hits (32) and runs (31) in the opener.

Everything went the Greyhounds' way in game one despite a rocky beginning.  UWP (4-39, 3-23 GLVC) scored three runs off four hits in the top of the first to jump ahead of starter Cory White 3-0.  A foreshadow of the day's events came in the bottom of the inning when Justin Russell reached on the first of six Ranger errors in the opener.  Three batters later, Ben Sondgeroth hammered his 11 homer of the season to wipe out the UWP lead and put the Hounds on top 4-3.  Five more runs came in the second and an eight-spot dotted the third for an 18-3 advantage.  Seven more Hounds crossed the plate in the fourth for an incredible 25-3 lead.

The UIndy starting nine went 26-for-40 in game one, but the bench had its share of success in the rout as well with 13 different Greyhounds notching a hit.

White went the required five innings to earn his ninth win before giving way to Vince Saisi for three innings and the final inning went to Ryan Wolfe, who made his collegiate debut Saturday.  Wolfe got two popups and a strikeout for a perfect ninth inning.

Game two started just as ominously as the opener.  UWP scored twice in the first and two more in the second to grab a quick 4-0 lead.  Again, it would be short-lived as the Hounds tied it in the second with four of their own and took the lead for good in the fourth with another pair.  The Hounds scored two more runs in the sixth to insure the win, giving their skipper his milestone victory-- and a Powerade shower after the final out.

UIndy chalked-up 14 more hits in the second game, helping the Greyhounds go a combined 46-for-89 (.517) for the day.  Sondgeroth enjoyed a 7-for-8 day with eight runs and four RBI.  Travis Capps was 5-for-8 in the doubleheader, driving-in seven.  Danny Collier hit his first homer of the season  in a pinch-hit effort before starting game two and adding three more hits to his total.

The wins helped Indianapolis keep pace GLVC East-leading Northern Kentucky, who swept Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday.  The Norse (16-6 GLVC East) are  mere percentage points ahead of the Hounds in the race for a league tournament spot, each with six divisional games to play.  Bellarmine (14-6) and Saint Joseph's (9-9) remain in the hunt in the East as the top three teams in each division will qualify for the six-team GLVC Championships in Sauget, Ill. May 7-10.

Notes:  The previous school record for hits came earlier this season, when UIndy knocked around Oakland City for 24 hits in a 21-11 win on Mar. 8 ... UIndy's 31 runs broke the school record of 29, also set earlier this year, a 29-2 drubbing of Kentucky State on Mar. 25 ... Coach Vaught now has a 667-473-2 (.585) overall record and 500-340-2 (.595) mark at Indianapolis ... UIndy has recorded double-digit run total in 16 games this season, just three shy of the most in a single season in the school's history (1998 team had 19 games with 10 runs or more).
