MARION, Ill.- The University of Indianapolis women's golf team took the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship with a convincing 22-stroke win versus the 11-team field Sunday. Individually, senior
Kristi Piepenbrink earned her first conference medal, thanks to a two-day score of 151 at Kokopelli Golf Course in Marion, Ill.
UIndy headed into Sunday's second round with a slim two-shot lead over Southern Indiana, but USI struggled with a 342 over the final 18 holes to help the Hounds run away with the title. Indianapolis followed Saturday's team score of 323 with a 320 Sunday to finish 22 strokes up on second-place Drury. The win gives the Greyhounds a league-high four conference titles, one higher than second-place Northern Kentucky.
Piepenbrink followed a similar path on the way to medalist honors. The two-time GLVC Player of the Month sat tied atop the leaderboard through one round, as her and Lewis' Amy Sachs each carded four-over 76s Saturday.
However, Sachs couldn't stay with UIndy's No. 1 Sunday, as Piepenbrink excelled with a 75 while Sachs' 86 dropped her down to sixth. Piepenbrink had a tournament-best seven birdies in two rounds and finished seven strokes better than the runner-up, Drury's Susan Allen.
All five Greyhounds finished in the top 20 at the 55-golfer event. Junior
Lyndsay McBride carded scores of 79 and 82 to share third place. Sophomore
Allison Tyler jumped up nine spots af6ter day one to finish tied for eighth, going for 85 and 80. Freshman
Darin Pinnick (83-85) and junior
Sarah Prascsak placed 13th and 17th, respectively.
The GLVC-champion Greyhounds will compete in the NCAA East Regional May 3-5. UIndy is ranked second in the current East Regional poll.
