Women's Golf: The University of Indianapolis women's golf team took the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship with a convincing 22-stroke win versus the 11-team field Sunday. Individually, senior Kristi Piepenbrink earned her first conference medal, thanks to a two-day score of 151 at Kokopelli Golf Course in Marion, Ill.  All five Greyhounds finished in the top 20 at the 55-golfer event. Junior Lyndsay McBride carded scores of 79 and 82 to share third place. Sophomore Allison Tyler jumped up nine spots after day one to finish tied for eighth, going for 85 and 80. Freshman Darin Pinnick (83-85) and junior Sarah Prascsak placed 13th and 17th, respectively.  The league title was the fourth in the school's history (1999, 2000, 2001, 2009).  The Greyhounds will compete in the NCAA East Regional May 3-5. UIndy is ranked second in the current East Regional poll.

Men's Golf:  The men's golf team placed second at the year's third and final Midwest Regional last Sunday and Monday with team scores of 293 and 311. The rain-soaked 19-team event took place at Purgatory Golf Club in nearby Noblesville, Ind. Apr. 19-20.  UIndy senior Justin Hueber, who finished fifth with a two-day score of 147, carded day two's second-lowest score with a two-over 74. Hueber notched birdies on both the 17th and 18th, part of a one-under back nine.  He has now placed in the top five in 10 of the 12 tournaments this season.  UIndy will head to the NCAA D-II Super Regional May 4-6 in Allendale, Mich.  The Hounds, who grabbed the top seed in the Midwest Region tournament, will battle for the right to go to the NCAA Championships in Blaine, Wash. May 19-22.

Baseball:  A perfect 5-0 mark on the week helped vault UIndy's record to 34-16 overall and into the league tournament.  The Hounds rallied for a 7-6 win in extra innings Thursday at SIU Edwardsville before dismantling Wisconsin-Parkside in four games over the weekend at home.  School records were broken for most runs (31) and hits (32) in the opener of the series, leading to 77 Greyhound runs for the four games combined.  Ben Sondgeroth and Adam Akin each hit grand slams on Sunday to finish off the sweep.  UIndy finishes off its regular season slate with a pair of doubleheaders at Bellarmine (Friday and Sunday).

Softball:   UIndy split at Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday before suffering a doubleheader sweep at Southern Indiana Sunday. The Greyhounds (28-16, 17-7 GLVC) enter the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. Indianapolis will take on No. 6-seeded Northern Kentucky in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Friday at 11:00 a.m. Eastern in East Peoria, Ill. UIndy swept its regular season doubleheader with the Norse 9-3 and 6-1 at Indiana Central Little League Mar. 28.  UIndy's qualification as the No. 3 seed is the best in school history, improving on last season's No. 4 seed.

Track and Field:  Seniors Amy Schmitz and Andrea Horban highlighted an impressive showing at the Stan Lyons Invite at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Field Stadium on the campus of IUPUI Saturday.  Schmitz grabbed a new school record in the hammer throw with a winning and automatic NCAA-qualifying heave of 57.07 meters while Horban finished in the top 20 in all four events in which she competed, provisionally-qualifying in two.  Horban threw the shot put 14.19 meters to finish third and was seventh in the hammer (49.50m), both NCAA provisional qualifiers.  Horban also picked-up eighth place in the discus with a 42.50-meter effort.  Emily Schaf tied for first in the high jump, clearing 1.72 meters, a provisional mark.  Heather Rourk was the winner in the javelin with a provisional throw of 42.82 meters.  Seth Galloway won the javelin on the men's side, launching a 62.63-meter throw and provisionally qualifying as well.  The Greyhounds will get used to the Carroll Stadium, hosting their next two meets there.  First on the docket is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Championships set for May 1-2.  UIndy will also host the Indy Twilight meet the following Wednesday at Carroll Stadium.

Women's Tennis:  The women's tennis team wrapped up its 2008-09 campaign at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships last Friday.  The Hounds (10-11) dropped a close 5-4 decision to Bellarmine in the quarterfinals.  UIndy got its lone doubles point from Kelsey Hartman and Ceciley Starkey (8-4) at No. 3.  UIndy was the victor at the bottom three positions to tie the score tied at 4-apiece. Alena Perez-Majul forced a third set at No. 3, but fell in the third set and the Knights escaped with the win.  Maggie Ashby, Meghan Teunis and Aly Neidlinger all won their respective singles matches at No. 4-6.

Men's Tennis:  The Greyhounds fell 5-2 to Bellarmine in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. JD Greenlee and Matt Smith  outlasted the Bellarmine team of Nathan Matthews and Nicolas Janssen-Bernard at No. 1 doubles, earning a slim 9-8 victory.  UIndy trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but BU won at each of the bottom three positions in singles play to garner the win.  Kyle Prow was victorious for the Hounds, rallying from a 7-5 defeat in the first set to post consecutive 6-4 wins in the next two sets for the win at No. 3.  Greenlee was locked in a battle at the top spot, trading identical 6-3 scores with Janssen-Bernard to force a deciding third set.  That set never finished, however, after BU scored its fifth team point.  The UIndy men (13-11) will now await word for NCAA tournament selection as the team currently sits eighth in the regional rankings.  The NCAA Regionals begin May 7 at the top-ranked team.
