INDIANAPOLIS- UIndy seniors
Justin Hueber and
Kristi Piepenbrink were each named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Golfer of the Month for their respective gender. March marks the third month the GLVC has named a men's and women's top golfer this academic year, with a Greyhound taking five of the six awards.
Hueber and Piepenbrink also shared the spotlight back in September as each garnered that month's GLVC Golfer of the Month award. The award's only other honorees came last October, with UIndy junior
Seth Fair and Lewis senior Jamie Siedlaczek taking the final monthly honor of 2008.
Justin Hueber finished with a monthly scoring average of 71.2 while taking medalist honors in two of three March tournaments. In UIndy's decisive win at the Minnesota St. Spring Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mar. 11, the Fort Wayne, Ind. native topped the 33-man field by tying a pair of school records, including lowest 18-hole score (65) and lowest 36-hole score (133).
He followed that up with a two-round score of 141 at the Northern Kentucky Spring Classic Mar. 23 to create a three-way tie at the medalist's spot.
In the team's final action of the month, Hueber began the North Alabama Spring Classic with an even-par 72 before battling wet condition in the second round to finish with a 153 and share 20th among 117 golfers.
Hueber has collected five individual titles this season and is currently leading all Division II men's golfers in the Golfstat Cup and is ranked fourth overall.
The 12th-ranked Indianapolis men's team will next compete at the Midwest Regional #2 held at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Perry Park, Kentucky on April 4-5.
As the lone senior on the women's squad,
Kristi Piepenbrink posted a 76.85 stroke average in three March events. Piepenbrink carded a three-round score of 234 to tie for 21st at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational Mar. 10, an event that featured five of Division-II's top ten teams.
The Greenwood, Ind. native shared seventh place at the Eastern Kentucky El Diablo Intercollegiate Mar. 13 by compiling scores of 75, 75 and 78.
She capped the month by helping UIndy to the team title at the rain-shortened NKU Spring Invitational Mar. 28. Piepenbrink shared 12th place with a 76, part of a program record-tying 18-hole team score of 300.
Piepenbrink is leading the GLVC this year in scoring average, having compiled a 75.1 average in 16 rounds. In the eight events she's competed in, she posted four top-five finishes and claimed one medalist honor.
The UIndy women's team, ranked 12th in the
Golf World/NGCA Golf Division II Poll, will next travel to Belle Vernon, Pa. for the Vulcan Invitational on Apr. 5-6.
