COLUMBUS, Ind.- The University of Indianapolis men's golf team heads into this week's 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships eying a second straight conference title and its league-leading 14th overall. The 12-team tournament will be held Apr. 9-10 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., the same course where UIndy won the 2008 crown by a GLVC-record 23 strokes.
The Greyhounds come into the conference tournament with some impressive credentials. UIndy's five-man team is averaging a sub-par 287.8 strokes per round this season, good for the lowest scoring average in all of Division II and third lowest among all NCAA programs. The Greyhounds are number one in the nation in team wins (6), par 4 scoring (4.09), and subpar strokes per round (3.33). Overall, UIndy is ranked 9th in D-II by Golfstat.com and 12th in the Golf World/Nike Division II Poll.
Individual, four different Hounds have combined to take medalist honors in seven of ten tournaments this season. UIndy No. 1
Justin Hueber leads the way with five individual titles on the strength of a 70.38 scoring average, good for fifth among golfers in all divisions and first in D-II.
Play at the 2009 GLVC Championship starts Thursday morning. Two rounds will be completed on the opening day, while the third and final round will take place Friday.
