INDIANAPOLIS- University of Indianapolis senior Ashley Fallos and the UIndy men’s soccer team were acknowledged at the school’s annual Recognition Banquet Sunday. Fallos, a four-year member of the volleyball team, won the Harvey M. Showalter Future Alumni Award, while the men’s soccer team was chosen as the Athletic Service Award winner.
Fallos was selected by the UIndy Alumni Association Board of Directors from a field of several accomplished nominees and later three finalists. The Gurnee, Ill. native is a four-year Lugar Scholar recipient, maintains a 3.781 GPA, and is a leader in the Social Work Student Association. She spearheaded a Senior Citizen Day on campus during "March is Social Work Month,” while receiving the Indiana Campus Compact grant the project. Her many service projects include the Appalachian Service Project and working with female inmates at Indiana Women's Prison on their service project called International Malaria Netting Project.
Fallos was also a team captain in the 2008 UIndy volleyball team. The Greyhounds won 110 matches in her four years on the squad to set the program record for most victories in a four-year span. She finished her career with 1,332 digs, good for the third highest total in school history.
The UIndy men’s soccer team also received a prestigious honor as recipients of the Athletic Service Award. The team reached out to the community Aug. 18, with members of the squad both participating in and assisting with the 1st annual “Shoot for Sammi” golf outing held, at Hillcrest Country Club in Indianapolis. The outing was held in memory of UIndy assistant coach Andy Hubbard’s infant daughter Samantha to benefit the CJ Foundation for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) research. Samantha died from SIDS in November of last year.
In all, the golf outing raised approximately $27,000 for the CJ Foundation, through hole sponsors, golfer sponsorships, a silent auction and other donations. The Greyhound soccer team contributed $2,200 of that total through sponsors for their golfers and other donations.
The Recognition Banquet was held last Sunday in the Schwitzer Student Center to salute 2009 seniors & honor UIndy’s commitment to leadership & service. The annual affair combines two previous events, the Senior Salute and the Leadership Banquet.
