Hounds secure NCAA berth

INDIANAPOLIS- In an announcement made by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee Sunday night, the University of Indianapolis baseball team will be one of 48 teams to participate in the upcoming 2009 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.  The Greyhounds earned the five seed in the six-team Midwest Regional tournament, held in Chillicothe, Ohio May 14-18, and will face second-seeded Grand Valley State at noon Thursday.

The championship provides for eight regional sites - six sites will host six teams, the West region will host four teams, and the South region will host eight teams.  All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played at on-campus sites Thursday through Sunday this week.

UIndy's NCAA berth is its first since 2003, when the Hounds won a pair of games before being eliminated by eventual national runner-up Grand Valley State.

GVSU will join Indianapolis at regionals as the two seed and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athlete Conference (GLIAC) automatic qualifier.  Fellow GLIAC-member Ashland comes in as the top seed and host school.

Three Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) teams round out the field.  Southern Indiana earned the three seed, GLVC tournament champ Northern Kentucky is seeded fourth, and Rockhurst will be the six-seeded squad.

The Midwest champ and the seven other regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 23-30 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
