FINDLAY, Ohio- University of Indianapolis junior Lyndsay McBride (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) capped a wonderful performance at the NCAA D-II Women’s Golf Championship with a final-round 77 in windy, rainy conditions at Findlay Country Club Saturday to take the 2009 individual national championship. Senior Kristi Piepenbrink (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) joined her in the top five, as the pair led the Greyhounds to a third-place tie in the 12-team event, their best finish in program history.

SATURDAY
Battling the elements, McBride held off a talented 72-woman field to take medalist honors.  She started the day with a two stroke lead, and though she bogeyed five of the first 11 holes, McBride (74-75-72-77) finished strongly with seven straight pars to edge Nova Southeastern’s Sandra Changkija (76-74-75-75) by two strokes.

Piepenbrink matched McBride’s final-round score as she also shot +5 on the last day.  The Second Team All-American earned sole possession of fifth place with a four-round score of 304 (77-74-76-77), with her two-over effort in Friday’s second round matching the best of the round.

In her second consecutive appearance in the D-II championship, junior Sarah Prascsak (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) carded a nine-over 81 Saturday to finish in 24th, this after sharing 15th place as an individual competitor in last year’s tournament.

Sophomore Allison Tyler (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and freshman Darin Pinnick (Washington, Ind./Washington) finished the event at +49 and +51, respectively.  Tyler (87-84-86-80) carded an 80 in the final round – her best the of the tourney – and finished tied for 51st, while Pinnick (80-84-86-89) shared 54th place.

As a team, UIndy posted scores of 309-315-310-314 in the event to tie with defending-champion Rollins College at 1248 strokes in 72 holes.  Top-ranked Nova Southeastern captured the team title, their first in school history, with a final score of 1230 (314-302-307-307), while fellow Midwest Region-school Grand Valley State shot 1245 (310-309-317-309) to take runner-up honors.

FRIDAY
Thanks to Thursday’s inclement weather, the country’s 12-best D-II squads played 36 holes Friday.  McBride started the day tied for third at two-over par, and after a second-round 75, she fired an even-par 72 to climb into the medalist’s spot.

Teammate Kristi Piepenbrink (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) also resides in the top five after her effort Friday.  As UIndy’s lone senior, Piepenbrink racked-up 16 pars in the second round to finish with a 74 and help vault her from 15th place after round one into a three-way tie for third heading into Saturday.

Junior Sarah Prascsak (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) fell back a bit Friday with scores of 78 and 81 to join a mass of golfers at +19.  Freshman Darin Pinnick (Washington, Ind./Washington) (80-84-86) followed a similar pattern to finish the day tied for 51st, and sophomore Allison Tyler (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis), who recorded three birdies in the second round, enters Saturday tied for 62nd place.

The Greyhounds are still in the hunt for a team national championship as they will begin final-round play 10 strokes back of leader and top-ranked Nova Southeastern.  UIndy (307-311-315) leads last year’s champion Rollins by one stroke and fellow Midwest Region-school Grand Valley State by two.  First-round leader Tarleton State recorded a 301 Wednesday but fell back to earth with 320 and a 324 Friday that dropped the team to fifth.

WEDNESDAY

After posting a first-round team score of 307, UIndy sits six strokes back of leader Tarleton State and two ahead of last year’s champion Rollins.  Junior Lyndsay McBride (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) carded a 74 on the day to share third place in the 72-golfer field.

In her first appearance at the NCAA Championships, McBride carded 12 pars and two birdies on the day to create a three-way tie for third.  She was joined by Florida Tech’s Daniela Iacobelli and California-PA’s Simone DeSouza at two-over par, four strokes back of the two leaders.

Junior Sarah Prascsak (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) had to pencil in a seven on the five-par first hole, but shot two-over golf from that point to finish the round with a 76.  Her first-round effort included a team-high three birdies to help her share ninth place.

Senior Kristi Piepenbrink (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) sat at two-under through five, but after notching a bogey on each of the final four holes, finished with a five-over 77 to tie for 15th.

Freshman Darin Pinnick (Washington, Ind./Washington) capped an eight-over opening round with a birdie on the par-5 18th to help her finish the day tied for 31st, while sophomore Allison Tyler (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) finished the round tied for 67th with a first-round 87.

Note:  Prascsak and Piepenbrink are the only two Greyhounds with previous experience in the championship finals, as Prascsak qualified as an individual last season while Piepenbrink did the same as a freshman in 2006.
