Women's Golf: The Greyhounds are competing in the NCAA East Regional through Tuesday and are currently tied for third after round one of three . The team is fresh off its Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship with a convincing 22-stroke win versus the 11-team field last week. Individually, senior
Kristi Piepenbrink earned her first conference medal, thanks to a two-day score of 151 at Kokopelli Golf Course in Marion, Ill. All five Greyhounds finished in the top 20 at the 55-golfer event. Junior
Lyndsay McBride carded scores of 79 and 82 to share third place. Sophomore
Allison Tyler jumped up nine spots after day one to finish tied for eighth, going for 85 and 80. Freshman
Darin Pinnick (83-85) and junior
Sarah Prascsak placed 13th and 17th, respectively. The league title was the fourth in the school's history (1999, 2000, 2001, 2009).
Men's Golf: The Hounds grabbed the top seed in the Midwest Region tournament. 10 teams from the Midwest Region and 10 from the South Central Region converge on The Meadows Golf Club in the hopes of advancing to the national finals. The top five teams and top two individuals not with those teams from each super regional (regardless of region) will move on to the finals, held at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash. May 19-22. UIndy won the Great Lakes Region last season en route to an eighth-place finish at NCAA nationals. In its last action this season, the squad placed second at the year's third and final Midwest Regional two weeks ago with team scores of 293 and 311. The rain-soaked 19-team event took place at Purgatory Golf Club in nearby Noblesville, Ind. Apr. 19-20. UIndy senior
Justin Hueber, who finished fifth with a two-day score of 147, carded day two's second-lowest score with a two-over 74. Hueber notched birdies on both the 17th and 18th, part of a one-under back nine. He has now placed in the top five in 10 of the 12 tournaments this season.
Baseball: UIndy (37-17) took three of four at Bellarmine in the final games of the regular season. While the Hounds already had a spot locked up in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, the wins were huge in terms of NCAA regional ranking. BU was ranked sixth in the latest rankings while UIndy held the seven spot. The top six teams qualify for the NCAA tournament. This week, the Hounds will focus on the league tournament, heading to Sauget, Ill. for the six-team GLVC Championships. The Hounds are the No. 2 seed in the East which gives them the three seed overall. The Hounds will do battle with Rockhurst in the opener of the double-eliminatioon tournament.
Softball: The Greyhounds (31-18) dropped their opening-round game to eventual champion Northern Kentucky, 5-4 at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, but ran through the loser's bracket all the way to the semifinals. UIndy pounded Missouri S&T 9-0 before a 10-0 trouncing of top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis, followed by a 5-2 win over Quincy to advance to the semifinals. There, Lewis escaped with a 3-2 victory to advance to the championship series. Junior
Jessica Breeden drove-in a dozen runs in the five tourney games, going 8-for 15 with three dingers. The Hounds qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second straight season and will travel to Ashland, Ohio for the NCAA Midwest regional this week. UIndy will battle Wayne State (Mich.) in the tourney opener. Host Ashland and Missouri-St. Louis round out the four-team, double elimination bracket set for May 9-11 play.
Track and Field: The Greyhound women were crowned the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Champions while the UIndy men fell just one point shy and settled for runner-up at the Friday-Saturday meet held at Michael A. Carroll Stadium downtown. Both Greyhound squads combined for eight individual titles and a relay championship Saturday, bringing the UIndy event championship total to 13.
Scott Fangman was named the GLVC Female Coach of the Year while
Kierra Allen nabbed the league's Female Freshman of the Year accolades. A complete recap of the championships can be found at:
athletics.uindy.edu/news/2009/5/1/MTRACK_0501090754.aspx . UIndy will host the Indy Twilight meet this Wednesday at Carroll Stadium.
Men's Tennis: The UIndy men (13-11) advanced to the NCAA tournament, set to begin May 7 at Rockhurst University. In their last action, the Greyhounds fell 5-2 to Bellarmine in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. JD Greenlee and Matt Smith outlasted the Bellarmine team of Nathan Matthews and Nicolas Janssen-Bernard at No. 1 doubles, earning a slim 9-8 victory. UIndy trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but BU won at each of the bottom three positions in singles play to garner the win. Kyle Prow was victorious for the Hounds, rallying from a 7-5 defeat in the first set to post consecutive 6-4 wins in the next two sets for the win at No. 3. Greenlee was locked in a battle at the top spot, trading identical 6-3 scores with Janssen-Bernard to force a deciding third set. That set never finished, however, after BU scored its fifth team point. Rockhurst, the No. 2 seed and Great Lakes Valley Conference champion, will host the Greyhounds in the opener of the NCAA Regional. The winner will advance to play either third-seeded Drury or Northern Kentucky, the six seed.
