ALLENDALE, Mich.- The University of Indianapolis men's golf team is headed back to the national championships for the second straight season after finishing tied for fourth place with a team combined score of 875 (+23) at the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional completed Wednesday at the Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The top five teams and top two individuals not with those teams all advance to the finals, held at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash. May 19-22.
The Hounds had to fend off a slew of nationally-ranked teams on the final day to stake its fifth-place position and berth into the NCAA finals. UIndy finished tied #18 Ferris State and ahead of #20 St. Edward's (+26), Texas A&M Commerce(+28), #11 Washburn (+30) and host Grand Valley State (+31). Central Oklahoma was in that group of contenders until a final-hole collapse that saw the Bronchos combine to go eight-over and fall to 10th-place team finish (+35).
Justin Hueber, recently named the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Golfer of the Year, again led the way for the Greyhounds. The senior was two-over on Monday, but rebounded for a six-under round on Tuesday. His second-round score of 65 set the course record and now UIndy can lay claim to both male and female course records at the Meadows after
Kristi Piepenbrink fired a course-mark 67 there in the fall.
Hueber did his damage to the par 5-holes at the Meadows, scoring three eagles and going a whopping 10-under par copmbined (2 pars, 4 birdies, 3 eagles) on the three longest holes of the tournament. His three-under tournament score was second to only that of Wayne State's Steve Cuzzort, who fired under-par rounds all three days and carded a 206 (-7) to help the Warriors to the team title as well.
Three Greyhounds finished within two strokes of each other with
Seth Fair leading the group at 10-over (T49th).
Kyle Pearson was one shot back and freshman
Aaron Monson was 12-over for UIndy.
Blair Webb shot an opening-round 82, rebounded for a nice one-under 70 Tuesday but fell back in the pack after another 82 on the final day.
UIndy won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional last season en route to a NCAA national bid, where it finished tied for eighth place.
The Greyhounds, along with 19 other teams, will compete for the D-II national championship May 19-22 in Blaine, Wash.
