BOX SCORE
SAUGET, Ill.- The University of Indianapolis baseball team opened the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 10-9 come-from-behind win versus Rockhurst Thursday at GCS Ballpark. The slugfest featured 11 extra-base hits, including a game-winning, three-run double from junior
Travis Capps in the bottom of the ninth.
UIndy (38-17) wasted no time jumping on the Hawks by hanging a three-spot on the board in the first. Russell mashed a 3-1 pitch over the high leftfield wall to start the scoring. RBI doubles from
Andrew Armour and
Danny Collier followed to give the Hounds a three-run lead after one.
The Hawks delivered three groundball singles and a sac fly to make it 3-2 heading into the bottom of the second, but UIndy answered with another surge in its half.
The Hounds again plated three, but this time without the aid of an extra-base hit. Indianapolis led off the inning with two hit batsman and a walk before
Adam Akin and
Chase Kittinger had nearly identical hits to no-man's land in center to drive in one apiece. A fielder's choice RBI from
Ben Sondgeroth followed, but a 1-6-3 double play halted the rally to make it 6-2 Hounds through two.
UIndy answered the Hawk's one-run third with a single run in the fourth when Russell led off with a triple to left center and as driven in on an Akin double.
Now down 7-3, Rockhurst used the long ball to close the gap. The Hawks started on the come-back trail with a solo shot from all-conference DH Mike Walczuk in the fifth. A homer from nine-hole hitter Justin Fujarski in the sixth preceded a run-scoring single that got RU within one.
Senior pitcher
Jordan Tiegs, who entered the game in the sixth, kept the Greyhounds ahead until the ninth inning. He allowed a double to start the seventh before striking out the side, and followed that with a 1-2-3 eighth.
The Hawks (35-20) finally broke through the ninth inning, however, capping a three-run frame with a two-run bomb from second baseman Jordan Myers that put UIndy down 9-7.
The Greyhounds had just three outs to produce at least two runs to avoid an early ticket to the losers' bracket. With one down,
Casey Potter, Collier, and pinch hitter
John Dury all managed singles to set up Capps' dramatic game-winner.
The Greyhound third baseman came through in the clutch with a shot to the right-center gap to clear the bases and give UIndy the win.
It was the first hit of the game for Capps as his three RBI marked a team high. Russell finished with two hits and three runs and Akin collected three hits and two RBI.
Normally a starter,
Andrew Werner needed to face just one hitter to get the win. Already up two runs in the ninth, the Hawks had one on and one out when Werner took the mound. The senior induced a 5-4-3 twin killing to up his record to 6-2.
UIndy now faces Bellarmine, who advanced by downing West Division-champ Southern Indiana 7-4 in 10 innings. The Greyhounds took three of four from the Knights on their home field just last weekend in the regular season finale. First pitch from GCS Ballpark is scheduled 7 p.m. Eastern Friday night.
