INDIANAPOLIS — University of Indianapolis Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey has named former UIndy standout Jason Warthan as the school’s new head wrestling coach, announced today.  Warthan, a 2001 graduate, was a three-sport standout for the Greyhounds, lettering in wrestling, cross country and track from 1997-2002.  Warthan officially begins at UIndy June 15 after the recent resignation of Josh Hardman.

“I want to thank Coach Warthan for coming back to campus to lead our wrestling program,” Dr. Willey said.  “We are excited to have someone so familiar with the school to be able to come in and provide some stability moving forward.  As a student-athlete, Jason was successful in competition, but also in the classroom and those are the types of individuals that we proudly produce at the University of Indianapolis.”

Warthan comes back to UIndy after a successful coaching career at Columbus North High School.  There, Warthan spent five years as the head wrestling coach, leading the team to five straight sectional championships, a semi-state title and the school’s first team state appearance.  He’s mentored six all-state grapplers, including an individual state champ, a runner-up and 11 state qualifiers.

At UIndy, Warthan was a three-time qualifier for nationals, earning All-America status in 2000.  The three-time “Little State” champion racked-up an impressive 88-28 (.759) career record as a wrestler.  Warthan also ran cross country and was a decathlete in the spring for the Greyhound track team.  He finished third in the decathlon in 2001 and fourth in 2002 at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.

In the classroom, Warthan was an Honor Roll student and twice made the Dean’s List.  He was named a Verizon Academic All-American wrestler in his senior season.

Warthan wrestled for long-time UIndy head coach Terry Wetherald, who was the Greyhounds’ director last season.
