Football: The Greyhounds open this year's campaign at home this week with a Thursday night contest versus Kentucky Wesleyan. The Hounds return 36 letterwinners and 12 starters from last year's squad, including 2009 Consensus Draft Services Second Team Preseason All-America C
Tim Dury. Transfer
Paul Corsaro comes in from DI-AA Youngstown State to compete with sophomore
Rob Doyle for the starting quarterback gig. The Hounds will also get OL
Eric Quintana back from injury to bolster a solid front that includes returners Dury,
Adam Prichard and
Andrew Mansaray. The entire defensive secondary returns, anchored by '08 All-GLIAC second-teamer
Craig Ray. The young and talented defense includes three sophomore starters, three juniors and two seniors: DB #J.T. Owens
and DL Randall Courtney#. Head Coach Joe Polizzi and his Hounds host the KWC Panthers at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Key Stadium.
Volleyball: The UIndy volleyball team opens its 2009 season with four matches at the Ferris State Invitational this weekend. Head Coach Jody Butera -- 286-153 in 12 years at UIndy – has guided her team to back-to-back appearances in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and looks to take it even deeper in '09. The Hounds are led by their two team captains, libero
Kyleigh Turner and outside hitter
Lyndsay Callahan, as both were named to the All-Midwest Region First Team last year. Another key cog will be all-conference junior
Cheneta Morrison, who moves from the outside to setter this season. Two of UIndy's opponents this week made the NCAAs last season, including Sweet Sixteen participant Saginaw Valley State (25-8 in '08). The Hounds face those same Cardinals this Friday at 1 p.m.
Men's Soccer: Head Coach John Griffin, the winningest men's soccer coach by percentage in UIndy history, returns seven starters and 12 lettermen from last year's 6-7-4 team.
Cory Barber,
Diego Lemus and
Mar Wane are the only seniors on the squad, but aspiring newcomers will supplement a talented Greyhound roster. Wane garnered Second Team All-Region accolades last season while Barber was named the team's M.V.P. UIndy, who was picked fifth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll, kicks off its season in Memphis, Tenn. versus Christian Brothers Friday.
Women's Soccer: Third-year head man
Geoff Van Deusen guided the Hounds to an 11-win season in 2008, including an overtime victory over Quincy in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals. The '09 Hounds were picked to finish sixth by the GLVC's coaches and bring back eight starters from last year's squad. Seniors
Amanda Reese and
Ashley Seehase lead the UIndy offensive attack. Both collected all-conference laurels in '08, with Reese also receiving a Second Team All-Region nod. The Hounds begin play this Friday evening by hosting Saginaw Valley State at 7:30 p.m. at Key Stadium.
Women's Golf: Coming off its most successful season in program history, the UIndy women's golf team starts its 2009-10 season this weekend at the two-day Trine Fall Invitational. The Greyhounds return four of their top five golfers from last year, including 2009 NCAA D-II individual national champion
Lyndsay McBride. McBride will be joined by fellow senior and all-region performer
Sarah Prascsak, junior
Allison Tyler and sophomore
Darin Pinnick. The Hounds were one of four UIndy teams to capture a Great Lakes Valley Conference title last year. The ladies went on to finish third at the 2009 East Regional last May before tying for third at the NCAA Championships.
