INDIANAPOLIS- Senior
Amanda Reese led the University of Indianapolis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Saginaw Valley State in the season opener Friday night at Key Stadium. Sophomore
Shae Morris not only garnered her first career win, but got it via shutout, blanking the Cardinals and giving the Hounds their fourth win in the last five season openers.
The only goal came in the 15th minute. After
Lauren Soza gained control,
Shelby Spinelli served a nice cross to the left post, where Reese awaited to head it into the back of the net for the early lead.
The score stayed there, but Saginaw Valley (0-1-0) was not without its chances. The Cards missed an opportunity when in the 58th minute, Abby Bellamy's shot off the corner kick was blocked and the rebound spit right back to Kristne Tomczyk who fired a shot high as UIndy dodged a bullet. The best chance of the night came in the 76th minute when Charley Porter's shot from directly in front of the goal hit flush on the crossbar.
But, Morris and the UIndy defense were up to the challenge to earn the win. SV was able to generate 10 shots, but none on goal.
The Greyhounds are in action Sunday with a noon kickoff against Northern Michigan. The Wildcats (1-0-0) were 2-1 winners over Saint Joseph's in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
Notes: Reese's goal was her 28th career tally, tying teammate
Ashley Seehase for the active leader in that category ... the win marked the 10th straight time that a UIndy win has come via shutout (dating back to 2-0 win over Ashland Sep. 5, 2008).
