MATCH 1
UIndy didn't own a lead through the early going of the opening set and trailed by as many as three, but with the score knotted at 15-all, the Hounds scored ten unanswered to take the 1-0 lead.
Lyndsay Callahan delivered two aces while serving the final nine points of the frame, while
Cheneta Morrison and
Kristina Kerrigan added two kills apiece during the run.
After taking the second set, UIndy looked poised for the sweep by building a 21-17 advantage in the third, but UMC allowed just two more points to finish on a 7-2 run and extend the match.
UIndy responded with its best hitting set of the day, racking up a gaudy .476 attack percentage during a 21-10 fourth-set win. The offensive attack featured 10 kills on 21 swings with zero errors.
Morrison had a fine all-around match by amassing team highs in assists (31) and kills (13) while also compiling eight digs, three block assists and a .478 hitting percentage.
MATCH 2
After dropping the first set – their first opening-frame loss of the invitational – the Greyhounds won three straight to defeat a talented Northwood squad.
Both teams were efficient offensively in the first set, with the Hounds edging Northwood .344 to .343. But it was the Timberwolves, an NCAA Tournament participant from last season, that took the early lead with a 25-23 first-set win.
UIndy came right back to take the second set 25-19. Down 12-10, the Hounds got three quick kills from Kerrigan to help fuel a 7-1 rally, one they rode to a 25-19 win.
Indianapolis continued to keep the Northwood potentially potent offense in check, as the Wolves would not reach 20 points in each of the final three sets. After its solid offensive attack in the first, NU hit just .087 the rest of the way.
Hannah Kelzer set a personal best with 11 kills without committing an attack error. The sophomore middle also added four digs and four block assists, while Kerrigan and
Kristina Hefferan combined for 17 kills and five total blocks.
With Callahan, Morrison and Turner all making the all-tournament squad, Indianapolis was the only school with three representatives. Callahan notched two double-doubles and amassed 42 kills and 47 digs in the four matches. Morrison averaged 9.4 assists per set while killing 23 balls and scooping 28 digs, and Turner racked up 67 digs and eight service aces.
