Football: The Greyhounds were 31-3 victors over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan last Thursday. Sophomore QB Rob Doyle threw for a career-high 260 yards and two scores, going 24-for-33 passing. Sophomore WR Joe Leach grabbed a game-high eight balls for 101 yards. The UIndy defense allowed just 66 yards passing and Collin Coffer blocked a field goal and returned it 79 yards to put the game away in the fourth quarter. UIndy (1-0) will have its hands full this weekend, hosting the top-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers, who are owners of a 43-game regular-season winning streak.
Volleyball: UIndy won all four of its matches at the Ferris State Invitational, led by Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week Cheneta Morrison. The junior setter helped the Hounds defeat a pair of NCAA tournament teams from last season in Saginaw Valley State and Northwood in addition to wins over host Ferris State and Minnesota, Crookston. Morrison was one of three All-tournament players for UIndy, joining libero Kyleigh Turner and outside hitter Lyndsay Callahan. The Greyhounds, now ranked #20 in the nation after their 4-0 weekend, travel to Marion, Ind. to face Indiana Wesleyan Tuesday before heading to Florence, Ala. for the North Alabama Classic this weekend.
Women's Soccer: Senior Amanda Reese had two goals and an assist to lead the Hounds to a pair of victories to start the season. Her performance earned her GLVC Player of the Week accolades. The in-region wins came with a 1-0 win over Saginaw Valley State on Friday and a 4-1 victory over Northern Michigan Sunday. Reese scored both game-winners to give her 29 career goals, most among Greyhound active players. Dana Rosswurm, Briana Syverson and Lauren Soza all added goals on Sunday, etching the first four-goal game against the Wildcats since the 2006 season. UIndy (2-0-0) plays at Tiffin Thursday followed by a home match with Missouri-St. Louis Sunday to open league play.
Men's Soccer: Freshmen led the way for the Greyhounds en route to a 1-0-1 weekend.
Bobby Adkins had the lone Hound goal in a 1-1 double-overtime draw Friday with Christian Brothers, then scored and had an assist in a 4-2 win at Lambuth (Tenn.) Sunday afternoon. Roger Lee netted a pair of goals in the win and Diego Lemus capped the scoring with a game-winner to break a 2-all tie. Justin Roberts was solid in net, playing all 200 minutes. Head Coach John Griffin earned his 50th career win Sunday, improving to 50-32-15 in his six seasons.
Women's Golf: Led by defending national champion Lyndsay McBride, the University of Indianapolis women's golf team opened its 2009-10 season with a convincing 24-stroke win at the Trine University Fall Invitational at Zollner Golf Course Sunday. McBride took medalist honors with an eight-over 148, five strokes better than runner-up and fellow UIndy senior Sarah Prascsak. All of the seven competing Greyhounds finished in the top half of the field, including taking four of the top five individual spots. The Hounds combined for a two-day team score of 621 (307-314) to comfortably best the four-team field. The team heads to Big Rapids, Mich. next weekend for the single-round Bulldog Invitational at Katke Golf Course Sep. 5 followed by the Laker Fall Classic Monday and Tuesday.
Men's Golf: The Greyhounds open their 2009-10 season at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday. Three of the Hounds' top five return, including Senior Seth Fair, junior Blair Webb and recently-crowned Indiana Open champ sophomore Aaron Monson. UIndy will be searching for its third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, which is being co-hosted this season by UIndy at the Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. Third-year head coach Brent Nicoson has led the squad to back-to-back league titles and was named the GLVC Coach of the Year on each occasion.
Men's & Women's Cross Country: Head Coach Kathy Casey leads the Greyhound harriers at their annual season opener, the Hokum Karem at Wabash College this weekend. The teams feature some larger rosters, 29 combined total student-athletes make-up the squads.
Women's Tennis: Head Coach John Venter, now in his seventh season coaching the women, leads the Greyhound tennis programs. His Greyhound women's team will open the 2009-10 season with a Saturday match at Ohio Dominican followed by the Hanover Double Invitational on Sunday. The Hounds lose just one senior from last season's squad and are vying for their fifth NCAA appearance in Venter's tenure.
