Lewis 3, UIndy 0
INDIANAPOLIS- In a battle of GLVC powers, the ninth-ranked UIndy volleyball team fell to No. 17 Lewis in three sets at the Ruth Lilly Center Friday night. The loss brought the first blemish to the Greyhounds' record, which now sits at 14-1. Lewis took the contest by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22, as the match marked the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The Greyhounds hit a solid .355 in the first set, though it translated to their lowest scoring frame. With the score tied at two apiece, Lewis (10-3, 1-0 GLVC) scored three straight to take a slight edge. The margin held, however, as the Hounds weren't able to get within two the rest of the way.
A more substantial run early in the second sustained the Flyers' momentum. The count was 5-5 just before Lewis went on a 9-1 bender to put the pressure on the home team. UIndy scrapped its way back to within one at 20-19, went down 22-19, and again fought back to make it 24-23 Lewis and force a second Flyer timeout.
But despite four second-set kills apiece from
Kristina Kerrigan and
Cheneta Morrison, LU garnered its 25th point on a kill by Lauren Seliga to make it 2-0.
Facing a possibility of being swept, UIndy reached down to hit .378 in the third game – its highest percentage of the night – but Lewis again fended a tenacious Hounds attack.
UIndy got down by as many as six at 16-10, but found a way to get back in it with a 10-5 run. A scoring swing by
Kristina Hefferan made it 21-20 Flyers as the Hounds looked to somehow extend the match.
Lewis would not wilt, however, scoring three of the next four points. A double block from UIndy
Courtney Anglemyer and
Kourtney Crawford followed, but it was not enough to deter the visitors as Seliga again killed the 25th point for Lewis.
Kerrigan was the lone Greyhound to finish in double-digits in kills, as the freshman compiled 12 kills and a match-high .458 hitting percentage. Morrison amassed 33 assists, 10 digs and seven kills, while Crawford was in on all three UIndy blocks.
The Gryehounds (14-1, 0-1 GLVC) look to bounce back tomorrow when they host the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers. Start time from the Ruth Lilly Center is scheduled for 3 p.m
