Late rally falls short as No. 2 Norse best UIndy 2-1

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A late rally by the Greyhounds fell short as No. 2 Northern Kentucky downed Indianapolis 2-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium.

The Norse (7-0-1, 4-0-0 GLVC) got on the board quickly after a shot by, reigning Division II Player of the Year, Steven Beattie sailed through the hands of Greyhound keeper Justin Roberts in the 7th minute on a pass from Kevin Donnelly.

Beattie struck again in the game's 32nd minute, notching his ninth goal of the season, when he slipped a ball passed Roberts that rolled just inside the post to give NKU a 2-0 advantage.

The Norse controlled much of the action in the opening 45 minutes of play and took at 8-3 shooting advantage into halftime as well as a 2-0 lead.

However, freshman Roger Lee would get the Greyhounds back in the match after he headed a free kick from Taku Chapman over the outstretched arms of the Northern Kentucky keeper to trim the lead to 2-1 in the 64th minute.  The tally was Lee's second of the season.

Indianapolis would keep pressuring the Norse defense, but could not manage to get another ball past Northern Kentucky keeper Michael Lavric despite three promising chances late in the contest.  Lavric made tremendous saves on two well struck balls and watched one sail just over the top of the goal to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Norse.

Freshman goalkeeper Hunter Extine got his first collegiate minutes between the posts for the Greyhounds when he relieved Roberts in the 37th minute and tallied three saves in his debut.

The loss drops Indianapolis to 3-3-2 on the year and 1-3-1 in conference play.  The Hounds will be back in action next Sunday when they travel to Rensselaer to take on the Pumas of St. Joseph's College in a GLVC matchup.  Kick-off is slated for 3:30 PM.
