Did you know?: Of the eight GLVC Women's Basketball Players of the Week awarded in 2009-10, UIndy has won the honor four times, including two by junior Samantha Meissel who is this week's winner.
Women's Basketball: The third-ranked Greyhounds contined their hot streak, rolling up three more wins to improve to 14-0 on the season. The Hounds have won all but one game by double digits and are stretching their school-record winning streak to start a season. Junior Samantha Meissel, who was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week, leads the league in scoring with 21.1 ppg. That total is fifth in all of NCAA Division II. UIndy will head to Bellarmine on Thursday before returning home for a tilt with Lewis and a quick road trip to Missouri S&T on Monday.
Men's Basketball: The Greyhounds are 9-5 overall this season, matching last season's win total midway through this campaign. Darius Adams' 19 points per game ranks fifth in the GLVC. He dumped-in 37 points in a 106-80 win at Maryville last Thursday and also added 10 rebounds in the win. Nate Blank registered a double-double as well, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 boards. UIndy lost a nail-biter on Saturday, falling by a bucket, 62-60, at Missouri-St. Louis. The Greyhound will play three games in five days, traveling to Bellarmine Thursday then hosting Lewis on Saturday. Nicoson Hall will celebrate its 50th Anniversary during its annual "Pack the House" night versus the Flyers. The stretch concludes with a one-day trip to Missouri S&T on Monday.
Track and Field: The Greyhounds are set to compete in their first event of the 2010 calendar year when they head to the Cedarville Friday. The Greyhounds will ramp up their schedule with meets on each weekend, prepping for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor meet, slated for Feb. 26-27, hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside. The UIndy women will be defending their title from a year ago while the men will look to grab a championship following a runner-up showing in 2009.
Wrestling: The Greyhound wrestling team finished fourth at the annual Midwest Classic, behind a championship-winning effort from senior Lynn Panko at 285. Panko, the seventh-ranked heavyweight in D-II, remained undefeated on the season, runing his mark to 13-0. UIndy earned a total of 104.0 points during the two-day tournament. Wisconsin-Parkside won the event with 127.0 points, Newberry took second with 117.5 points and Adams State placed third with 110.0 points total. Alex Johns and Bryce Givens both took third place in their respective brackets for the Greyhounds. Four additional UIndy wrestlers placed with Casey Kenney taking seventh place in the 133 bracket, David Lopez finishing sixth at 149, Jake Holler taking fifth at 165 and Cody Wittkamp sixth in the 197 field. Last weekend, the Hounds went 1-2 in duals, beating Mount Saint Joseph's (30-19) and dropping decisions to Ashland (24-18) and Limestone (22-10). Alex Johns (3-0), Bryce Givens (2-0) and Keith Smith (2-0) all registered unblemished marks on the weekend. UIndy hosts Calumet College of Saint Joseph's in a dual on Wednesday at Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
Swimming and Diving: In their first of three home events this month, the University of Indianapolis swimming teams hosted fellow D-II-member Urbana at the UIndy Invite Friday and Saturday. Junior Seth Smoker won both the 100 fly and the 200 IM as UIndy's only multiple individual winner Friday. He followed that with a win in the 400 IM on day two. Senior Erica Smith won four events: taking the 100 back on day one and followed that with wins in the 100 free, 100 breast and 200 back Saturday. The Greyhounds travel to Wabash College for a dual meet Jan. 16 before hosting Grand Valley State Jan. 23.
Softball: The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Tuesday that the University of Indianapolis has been selected the favorite in the league's 2010 Preseason Coaches Poll. Sixth-year head coach Melissa-Frost Fisher welcomes back three all-league honorees in P/DP Megan Russell ('09 GLVC Player of the Year), second-team 2B Jamie Keltz and honorable mention SS Carmen Martinez. Russell was a Second Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last season, guiding the Hounds to a 37-21 finish and the school's first regional title and NCAA World Series berth.
