UIndy escapes with three-point win

Box score

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The third-ranked University of Indianapolis women's basketball team (15-0, 6-0 GLVC) held off a relentless Bellarmine squad in a 71-68 final at Knights Hall Thursday night.  With UIndy up two in the waning seconds, the home Knights missed a long three, as the Hounds corralled the rebound to ensure their 15th straight win and remain undefeated.

UIndy led by as much as seven in the second half, but could not put the home team away.  Though the Greyhounds never trailed in the final 10 minutes, Bellarmine (10-6, 3-4) kept the margin within four down the stretch and finally tied with 91 seconds remaining.

A pair of made free throws from Samantha Meissel and an empty Knights' possession followed, as UIndy called timeout with a two-point edge and 45 ticks left.

Out of the stoppage, the Hounds ran the shot clock nearly all the way down before Canary drove the lane and kicked it out to Hillary Wenning for three.  The shot was off the mark and during the resulting tie-up, the ref awarded the Knights a timeout instead of calling the jump ball, giving the home team a chance with 22 seconds on the clock.

BU sophomore Allison Matheis, who sank four 3-pointers on the night, got the honors, as she pulled up from deep for the win.  It wasn't meant to be, however, as Canary grabbed the rebound and kicked it to Cayla Keegan before the Knights fouled.  One second remained as Keegan sank one of two at the line before a desperation heave from the Knights bounced harmlessly on the hardwood.

UIndy ranked fourth in the nation in scoring margin (+27.1) before Thursday's three-point win, one of only two single-digit wins on the season for the Greyhounds.  Nevertheless, Indianapolis upped its win streak to 15 while extending its program record for wins to start a season.

Meissel, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, recorded her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career with a 17-point, 11-rebound performance.  The 6-2 forward sank all four free throw shots and 6-of-12 field goal attempts, including her only 3-point try late in the game.

Canary matched Meissel's team-high point total while also adding six rebounds and six assists.  Katie Lyons scored 11, Keegan grabbed five boards and Katie Dewey garnered four steals.

UIndy returns home to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nicoson Hall by hosting Lewis Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.  A number of special activities are planned, highlighted by a women's and men's doubleheader versus the Flyers.  View the games live via webcast on your computer or on your mobile phone at http://www.livestream.com/uindyhounds.  An audio webcast is also available at http://wicr.uindy.edu/how_to_listen.htm, as well as live stats at www.sidearmstats.com/uindy/wbball/xlive.htm.
