Women's Basketball: Three more wins gave the Greyhounds a perfect 17-0 start on the season, tying the school record for longest winning streak. Ranked No. 3 in the nation as of Monday, the Hounds are led by junior Samantha Meissel, who earned her second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honor Monday--her third of the season. She is averaging 21 points per game to lead the league and is ranked in the top five in scoring in all of Division II. UIndy will host GLVC East rivals Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan this Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Men's Basketball: The Greyhounds picked-up their tenth win of the season (10-7, 4-4) to surpass last year's win total, leveling their conference record in the process with a 67-55 road win at Missouri S&T Monday. Junior Darius Adams poured-in 21 second-half points en route to a game-high 26 off-the-bench. Five of the Hounds' next eight games will be against teams currently ranked in the national top 25 poll, including four against top 10 squads. The tough stretch starts with home tilts against No. 5 Southern Indiana Thursday and No. 10 Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday.
Track & Field: The UIndy men's and women's track and field teams had impressive showings at the Cedarville Invitational on Friday as the men's squad placed third and the women fourth in the team standings behind strong performances by throwers from both genders. On the men's side, the Greyhounds took seven of the top eight positions in the men's weight throw with Matt Royer winning the event with a fieldhouse-record toss of 58' 6". UIndy also took the top four placements and five of the top seven with Shane Wyant leading the way with an event-winning attempt of 48' 7 1/4" in the men's shotput. The UIndy women were just as impressive in the throwing events, as the Greyhounds captured four of the first five spots in the weight throw. Courtney Kuzmicz won the event with a throw of 52' 2 1/2". Kuzmicz won her second event of the meet in the shotput, taking top honors after a heave of 38' 10 1/4". The teams will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wabash College for the Little Giant Invitational.
Swimming & Diving: The UIndy swim teams each picked-up dual wins Saturday at Wabash College as the women defeated Hillsdale, 147-110, and the men were 154-121 winners over the host school. The Greyhounds earned wins in all but nine of the 32 events contested. Seven different UIndy swimmers won two events: Shiran Abramzon, Maura Donahue, Meghan Donahue, Erica Smith, Guy Kogel, Deniz Alkan and Jaclyn Luscomb. Indianapolis will host Grand Valley State for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Ruth Lilly Center Pool.
Wrestling: The Greyhound wrestling team produced an individual champion and a top five placement at the Roger Denker Open, hosted by the University of Central Missouri in action on Sunday. Shelby Mappes claimed the individual title in the 174-pound bracket for the Greyhounds. The squad will return to the mats next Saturday when it travels to Crawfordsville, Ind. to compete in the Monon Bell Duals, hosted by Wabash College. Action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM.
Football: Twenty-two athletes from the University of Indianapolis earned Academic All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference accolades when the league released the teams Friday. To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and cannot be a freshman or a first-year transfer. UIndy has increased its numbers of All-Academic GLIAC football winners in each of the last four seasons and had six athletes honored to both the All-GLIAC and All-Academic GLIAC squads this year.
Baseball: The UIndy baseball team placed second in the East Division of the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Poll, released by conference officials Thursday. The Greyhounds, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll, garnered 70 points and four first-place nods in the vote by the league’s coaches. Indianapolis is coming off a 43-win campaign and an NCAA berth in 2009, advancing to the Midwest Region final. Last year’s win total represented the second-highest in program history, bumping head coach Gary Vaught’s career win total to a whopping 678 in 20 seasons as a college coach.
