Samantha Meissel grabbed her second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week award Monday. It marks the third weekly award for Meissel this season, as the junior forward averaged 20 points and seven rebounds in two Greyhound wins last week.
The third-ranked Hounds (16-0, 7-0 GLVC) extended their win streak to 16, thanks in part to the efforts of Meissel. The Terre Haute, Ind. native, who has shot at least 50 percent from the floor in each of the last six games, sank 14-of-24 field goal attempts last week (.583), including 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc. She also made all nine of her foul shots to extend her made free throw streak to 19.
Meissel started the week with a 17-point, 11-rebound performance at Bellarmine Thursday, good for her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career. With the score knocked at 68 and just 1:13 showing on the clock, Meissel calmly knocked down a pair of foul shots to put the Hounds ahead. The clutch shots proved to be the dagger, as the Knights would fail to score again before UIndy went on to the three-point win.
She followed that with a 23-point output in a 78-59 home win versus Lewis Saturday, shooting 8-for-12 from the field while adding a career-high-tying three blocks.
Meissel heads into play this week averaging a league-best 21 points per game while shooting 57.7 percent from the field, good for second in the conference. Meissel and the Greyhounds look to tie the program record for most consecutive wins tonight at Missouri S&T. The current mark of 17 straight victories came in the 2002-03 season when the Greyhound women finished 29-3 and won the GLVC Tournament.
Note: A Greyhound has won five of the nine GLVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week awards handed out this year, including each of the last three. Meissel has taking three already, while Jessica Canary and Katie Dewey each have won one.
