UIndy stands fifth after Day I of Midwest Classic

The Greyhound wrestling team closed out day one of the Midwest Classic sitting in fifth place in the tournament, with a pair of wrestlers still in championship contention.

UIndy finished the day with seven total wrestlers still alive in the tournament. Jake Holler and Lynn Panko both went undefeated to open the tournament, while Alex Johns, Casey Kenney, David Lopez, Bryce Givens and Cody Wittkamp are also still in contention in the wrestleback rounds of their respective brackets.

Holler, the Greyhound 165, went 3-0 with a pair of his wins coming over seeded opponents. The Orland Park, Ill. native opened the day with a pin in 2:10 of Findlay's Kris Bower in his first bout. He followed with a 1-0 decision against second-seeded Stephen Towne of Grand Canyon and finished his day with a 4-0 win against seventh-seeded Donnie Bowden of Northern State.

Panko  ran through his competition in the 285 bracket, earning a pair of pins and a major decision in his three wins on the day. The top-seeded Panko pinned Manchester's Casey Bushong in 47 seconds to open the day, and followed up with a 16-4 major decision victory against eight-seeded Matt Clum of Findlay for his second win. He pinned Adams State's four-seeded Jeff Schossow in 3:50 to close out the day.

Johns, the six-seed in the 125 field, went 2-1 on the day with a pin. Kenney posted a 3-1 record, taking a major decision in his final bout of the day. The eight-seeded Lopez was 2-1, while Givens (pictured) was 3-1 with a pair of major decisions and a fall. Wittkamp was also 3-1 for UIndy on day one.

The Midwest Classic continues tomorrow, with wrestling starting at 10 a.m. from Perry Meridian High School. Wisconsin-Parkside currently leads the team race with 85 total points, while Newberry stands in second with 76 points. Findlay (66 points) and Adams State (65.5 points) round out the field ahead of UIndy's fifth-place standing.

NOTES: Panko remains undefeated on the 2009-10 season with his three wins today, running his season record to 11-0...Panko has taken nine of his 11 victories via a pin or major decision.
