INDIANAPOLIS- Led by 24 points from
Samantha Meissel and 20 from
Jessica Canary, the third-ranked University of Indianapolis women's basketball team set a new program record for consecutive wins with a 74-64 victory against visiting Southern Indiana Thursday night at Nicoson Hall. The win marked the 18th straight for the Greyhounds, upping their record to 18-0 on the season and 9-0 in conference play.
The Greyhounds sank 54 percent of their field goals on the night, and have now shot better than 50 percent in three straight games and six of the last seven. Meissel and Canary combined to shot 15-of-27 (.556) from the floor, marking the third time this season the two each scored at least 20.
UIndy racked-up 14 of the game's first 16 points to seize control. The run featured a nice transition bucket from Meissel, as well as the second career 3-pointer from senior
Sarah Fenneman.
After a slow start, the Screaming Eagles (15-4, 6-2) made five of their next seven shots, part of a 13-4 run that trimmed the UIndy lead to three at 18-15. The make matters worse, the Greyhounds were whistled for six offensive fouls in the first half, helping USI back in the game.
With the end of the half drawing near, Meissel scored on three consecutive possessions to keep the Hounds in front. Meissel, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, led all scorers at intermission with 13 points to help stake the Hounds to a nine-point halftime advantage.
Out of the break, the Hounds extended the lead to 16 points. Back-to-back fast break buckets from
Katie Lyons and Canary made it 48-32 with 15:47 to go, forcing a USI timeout.
The UIndy lead hit a game-high 18 at the 6:23 mark and again 40 seconds later. Despite the Greyhounds not hitting a field goal for the final 7:40, the lead stayed in double-digits the remainder of the contest, as the Eagles hit a lay-up at the buzzer for the 74-64 final.
In addition to their lofty point totals, Meissel added four rebounds and two blocks while Canary amassed team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (6).
UIndy remains home to host Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Note: UIndy's previous record for consecutive wins came in the 2002-03 season when the Hounds ran off 17 straight before finishing with a 29-3 record and a GLVC championship.
