UIndy announces 2010 Hall of Fame class


The Department of Athletics and the Greyhound Club are pleased to announce the 2010 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class. This year's Hall of Fame ceremony and events will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The inductees will be introduced at half-time of the Men's basketball game vs. Drury University. The game begins at 3:00 p.m. with a dinner and induction ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on campus at the Schwitzer Student Center, UIndy Hall. The ceremony will feature the official Hall of Fame inductions and brief remarks by the inductees. Dinner tickets are $25 per person and $10 for children (12 and under). This year's inductees are:

Herman Bueno graduated from University of Indianapolis in 1980.  He was a four-time letterwinner in both cross country and track and field.  Bueno earned MVP honors all four years in cross country.  He also earned HCC Cross Country Outstanding Runner in '78 and '79 and All-Conference in '76-'80.  In '79, Bueno was a GLVC and Little State Champion and was a NCAA Division II National Qualifier in '78 and '79.  In track and field, Bueno earned HCC All-Conference all four years and was Track and Field's HCC Most Valuable Runner in 1980.  He was a Track Little State Steeplechase champion and NCAA Division II National Qualifier in '77 and '78.  After a successful career at UIndy, Bueno began coaching cross country and track and field at Southport Middle School.  He was inducted into the Southport High School Wall of Fame in 2004.  Bueno also was honored as University of Indianapolis Greyhound Club's 2006-2007 'I' Person of the Year.

Lettering in basketball for four years, the late John Fredenberger graduated from UIndy in 1942.  Fredenberger was a member of the only undefeated basketball team in school history occurring in '42.  The team was ranked 9th nationally by the Dunkel Rating System.  Fredenberger was an educator and basketball coach at Mississinewa High School for 14 years.  He compiled an outstanding record of 248-98.  His teams won six county tournaments, two Mississinewa Valley Conference Championships, two sectional championships, and one regional championship.  Fredenberger also served as Mississinewa High School athletic director, assistant principal, and principal before retiring in 1981. 

Ben Harlan received his B.S. in 1957 from University of Indianapolis.  Harlan lettered four years in tennis, serving as captain and coach of the team all four years.  He was undefeated in both singles and doubles during his time on the tennis team.  In '54, the team was conference champions and all the players were voted All-Conference.  After Harlan's time at UIndy, he continued playing tennis winning numerous city and state tournaments in singles, men's doubles and coed doubles.  In '61, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce honored Harlan with an award for his outstanding achievements in tennis.  He was also inducted into Arsenal Tech High School's Hall of Fame in 2005 for his successful high school tennis career.  Harlan earned his MBA from Butler University in '63 and retired from Methodist Hospital as an accounting executive in 1996. 

A UIndy football standout and four year letterwinner, Carol Purichia graduated in 1961.  Purichia served as quarterback for the '60 All Hoosier College Conference Championship Team.  He was also a '60 Little All-American Quarterback Candidate and at one point during his junior year he was leading the nation in passing yardage per game.  After a successful college career, Purichia continued his success as the '63 quarterback for the Indianapolis Warriors Professional Football Team and then began coaching.  He started at Cathedral High School coaching three undefeated wrestling teams, three undefeated reserve football teams, and one undefeated City Championship baseball team.  He was the 1968 Indiana Central Coach of the Year after coaching Bishop Chatard to two Capital District Championships in '65 and '66, winning the '67 Indianapolis City Championship, and winning the '68 City Championship with an undefeated team record of 10-0.  At the collegiate level, Purichia coached at Indiana State University and Western Illinois University.  Purichia earned an M.S. from Butler University and is currently the Director of Client Services at Bowers Envelope Company.

A four year letter winner in football and baseball, Richard 'Dick' Schrier was a 1956 graduate of University of Indianapolis.  Starting quarterback, Schrier lead the '53, '54, and '55 football team to three conference championships.  He also earned all conference quarterback honors for those three years.  In '55, he earned MVP honors for football.  Schrier has held a number of football records including: 9th in all time pass completions, 7th in passing yards, and 4th in touchdowns.  Schrier earned all conference honors in baseball from 1953 to 1956 and served as the team's co-captain in '56.  He also helped the baseball team earn three conference titles during his time at UIndy.  Following graduation, Schrier obtained a master's degree in Education and pursued a long and successful career as a teacher and coach at several Indiana high schools.  A memorial scholarship was created in honor of Schrier.  The Richard E. Schrier Student-Athlete Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to graduating student-athletes planning to pursue graduate education.   Recipients are selected based on their academic achievement, performance in varsity intercollegiate athletics, and graduate program goals and needs.

The 1960 Men's Golf Team is considered an outstanding golf team at UIndy.  The team won 8 contests and tied once, never losing against an opponent.  The team won first place in the conference tournament and 7th at Little State.  The golfers ended their successful season with a 4th place finish in the NAIA tournament. 

Coach Paul Velez brought his career to an end with one of his youngest and best teams, the 1970 Wrestling Team.  The fourteen team members and their coach flew through a 14-3 record scoring a total of 430 points to their opponents' 232 points.  After the first night of action at the HCC Tournament the Hounds were down 20 points from leader Taylor University.  The next day the tables turned and the spirited Greyhounds came back to win over Taylor 77-71 for their 5th of 6 Conference Championship.

UIndy Athletics would also like to recognize the Greyhound Club's 2009-2010 'I' Person of the Year, Ron Strain.  Strain graduated from University of Indianapolis in 1957 with a business administration degree.  He was a tennis letterwinner.  Strain has earned many recognitions including:  Ron and Laura Strain Education Center Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, The Philip Morris Silver Ring Merit Award, and Who's Who in Business.  Strain has also served on many boards including: Oxy-Dry Corporation Trade Advisory Board, Mount Mary College Board of Trustees, and Urban League Board.  He retired from the Miller Brewing Company as Vice President-Finance and Treasurer in 1993.  Golf, tennis, photography, and foreign travel are some of the things he enjoys to do in his free time.  He currently resides in Naples, FL with his wife, Laura.
