INDIANAPOLIS- The third-ranked University of Indianapolis women's basketball team earned its 19th win in as many games this season with an 82-52 decision versus Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at Nicoson Hall. The Greyhounds (19-0, 10-0 GLVC) led wire-to-wire as the visiting Panthers shot just 29 percent from the floor. UIndy sophomore
Cayla Keegan totaled eight points, six assists and three steals on the day.
It took just over five minutes for the Greyhounds to build a double-digit lead. Much as they did Thursday versus Southern Indiana, the Hounds got out of the gate quickly with an 11-1 after scoring 14 of the first 16 points Thursday.
The halftime score of 42-19 marked the seventh time this season the Hounds held their opponents to under 20 first-half points. The Panthers (10-9, 3-7) shot just 24 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes, compared to 59 percent-shooting from UIndy.
Katie Lyons led the charge as the junior forward totaled game highs of 10 points and five rebounds at the break.
With the Hounds up 23 early in the second, KWC chipped away at the lead with eight unanswered points to make it 50-35 with 14:37 to go. The Panthers managed to keep it in the teens for the next five minutes before a 3-pointer from
Katie Dewey made it 59-39. Dewey sank four of seven attempts from long range to finish with 16 points.
The Greyhounds remained in control the rest of the way, with the lead topping out at 31 on a Keegan reverse lay-up in the final minute. The strong baseline move capped a 12-0 run for the Hounds, ensuring their sixth 30-point win of the season.
UIndy actually finished with four more turnovers than KWC, but the Hounds more than compensated with a 29-for-55 (.527) effort from the field.
Samantha Meissel led all scores with 18 points, followed by Dewey's 16 and 12 from
Sarah Fenneman. Senior
Jessica Canary added nine points and eight assists, Dewey garnered four steals, while five Greyhounds compiled at least five rebounds.
With a three-game lead in the GLVC East Division, UIndy has a pair of GLVC North games on the docket next week. The Hounds travel to Saint Joseph's Thursday evening before heading to division-leading Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon.
Note: The Greyhounds' 19-game win straight represents the program record for consecutive victories. The old mark of 17 was set by the GLVC-champion 2002-03 squad that finished 29-3.
