Greyhound grapplers finish 2-1 at Eastern Michigan Duals

YPSITLANTI, Mich. - The UIndy wrestling team finished the Eastern Michigan Duals with a 2-1 record on Saturday (Jan. 23), collecting wins over Thiel and Olivet while falling to the host Eagles.  Alex Johns led the Greyhounds, finishing the day with two pins and a major decision in his three bouts.

Johns was the only winner for the Greyhounds in their opening match with Eastern Michigan, pinning EMU's Chris Egbert in 2:36 to give the Indianapolis an early 6-0 lead.  However, the Eagles would sweep the remaining bouts on their way to a 36-6 victory.

UIndy rebounded with dominating wins over Thiel and Olivet as Johns was impressive once again, earning a 12-0 decision over Adam Householder of Thiel and pinning Olivet's Evan Cusumano at the 1:47.

Ethan Harris finished his day with a 2-1 record, earning technical fall victories over Kyle Grueninger of Thiel and Adam Wilson of Olivet.

Other 2-1 finishers for the Greyhounds included David Lopez, Bryce Givens, Shelby Mappes, and Lynn Panko

After suffering a narrow 6-4 defeat in his opening match, Lopez rebounded by pinning Thiel's Matt Butler in 4:33 and earning a 7-2 decision over Greg Roberts of Olivet.  Givens picked up three points for the Hounds with his 11-7 decision over Greg Hogan of Thiel before collecting five more team points following a technical fall victory over Olivet's Ben Hitchcock.

Mappes, fresh off his individual title at the Roger Denker open, dropped his first bout of the day by a 3-2 margin to Eastern Michigan's Nick Hedrick, but responded win a pin of Thiel's Jeff Rockenstein at the 1:40 mark and a dominating 19-3 technical fall over Edward Manier of Olivet.

Panko, who entered the event as Division II's seventh-ranked wrestler at 285, suffered his first defeat of the season to EMU's David Wade.  Like Mappes, Panko responded with a pin and technical fall win.

The UIndy wrestling squad will return to action on Friday when they travel to Wheaton, Ill. for the Wheaton Invitational.  The two-day event is scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM on Friday afternoon.
