RENSSELAER, Ind.- With help from double-doubles from a pair of its team leaders, the second-ranked UIndy women's basketball team earned a hard-fought road win in a 65-51 decision over Saint Joseph's Thursday night. The Greyhounds shot a season-low 41 percent from the field but got 16 points and 11 rebounds from
Samantha Meissel and 16 points and 10 boards from
Jessica Canary to hold off a persistent Pumas squad and earn its 20th straight win.
Meissel's and Canary's statistical efforts marked the first time since November 2005 that two Greyhounds notched a double-double in the same game. The Hounds are now 29-9 (.763) all time when two Hounds turn the uncommon trick in the same contest.
UIndy (20-0, 11-0 GLVC) led by as much as 11 in the first half but could not deliver the knockout blow until late in the latter period. The Greyhounds used a large rebounding disparity (24-9) to stay ahead for the vast majority of the opening half. That total was supplemented by eight offensive boards, leading to 12 second-chance points for the visitors before the break.
After earning a 37-29 cushion at intermission, the Greyhounds began the second half with a 12-4 run to take control. Meissel hit a short jumper just 13 seconds into play, and later Canary hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to up the lead to 14 with nearly 17 minutes left.
A field goal drought would stricken the Hounds from that point, however. Three UIndy free throws pushed the margin to a game-high 17, but after the Canary jumpers, the Hounds would not get a bucket from the floor for nearly six minutes, as the home Pumas slowly cut into the lead.
Katie Lyons ended the dry spell with a jumper at the 10:37 mark to get the margin back to 14, but Saint Joseph's (5-15, 3-8) continued to close the gap. The Pumas used a 14-4 rally to get within seven with 5:30 to play, but four straight points from sophomore
Cayla Keegan got the lead back to double digits. SJC managed just four more points the rest of the way as UIndy eventually went on to the 14-point win.
The Greyhounds overcame their season-low shooting percentage and a -12 turnover margin by holding their hosts to just 32 percent from the floor and out-rebounding them a whopping 49 to 23.
In addition to her eighth career double-double, Canary was one of three Greyhounds with five assists.
Katie Dewey and
Hillary Wenning also added five dimes, while Lyons chipped-in 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Ranked No. 1 in the freshly-released Midwest Regional poll, UIndy heads up to the Kenosha, Wis. to face a talented Wisconsin-Parkside team. The Rangers are ranked third in the region. Tip time from DeSimone Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
