SOMERS, Wis.- The UIndy women's basketball team's 21st win of the season was a big one, as the second-ranked Greyhounds downed a talented Wisconsin-Parkside team, 72-59, at DeSimone Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The visiting Hounds forced more than twice as many turnovers as they committed to remain undefeated and hand the Rangers just their fourth loss of the season.
The Rangers (18-4, 10-3 GLVC) came into the game with a 16-game home winning streak dating back to last year. UIndy, who was the last team to defeat the Rangers on their home court before Saturday, halted the streak with a convincing double-digit win, thanks largely to a 14-4 run earlier in the second half.
UIndy (21-0, 12-0) scored the first points of the final period to build a seven-point edge, but UW-Parkside quickly erased the deficit with an 11-4 run, knotting it at 35 with 16 minutes remaining. That's when the Greyhounds' jumpers started falling, beginning with a pair of momentum-shifting 3-pointers from junior
Hillary Wenning.
Jessica Canary followed suite by dropping two more from downtown, capping the game-changing rally that ultimately proved too much for the home team to overcome.
Later,
Heather Gonser and
Katie Dewey also connected from outside to uphold the cushion. The Hounds sank six second-half triples on the Rangers' 2-3 zone, part of 10 made threes in the game.
Though UIndy made half of its field goal attempts in the second half, the Greyhounds shot just 40 percent from the floor overall. Their 36 missed field goals helped the Rangers to a +11 rebounding margin, but the Hounds committed a season-low-tying eight turnovers while forcing 19 from Parkside. That latter stat was boosted by 12 Greyhounds steals, half of which were credited to senior
Katie Dewey.
Junior
Samantha Meissel led all scorers with 17 points on 7-for 13 shooting, Canary garnered 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Dewey added nine points and four boards to supplement her lofty steal total. All ten active Greyhounds scored in the win.
UIndy's tough stretch continues next week when it faces Rockhurst Thursday, Feb. 4, and West-Division-leading Drury Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip time from Nicoson Hall Thursday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
