Did you know?: Seven Greyhounds athletics teams head into the New Year ranked in the top 20 in the nation, with women's basketball (4th), women's golf (5th), men's golf (9th), women's swimming (11th), men's swimming (15th), baseball (15th), and wrestling (18th) all garnering high marks in their latest respective polls.

Men's Basketball: The UIndy men (8-4, 2-1 GLVC) have had a busy break thus far, hosting six games since the conclusion of finals.  The Hounds went 5-1 over that time, with their only loss coming in a nine-point decision to No. 22 Quincy Jan. 2.  The highlight came Monday night in a double-overtime win versus GLVC-newcomer Illinois-Springfield.  Indianapolis overcame an eight-point deficit in the final 48 seconds to force the first overtime period before scoring the game's final six points in the second extra frame to earn the hard-fought win.  Six Greyhounds scored in double figures in the contest, with junior Ryan Sims putting in a team-high 19 points and junior Darius Adams adding 16 points and 10 assists.  UIndy hits the road for the first time in a month when it travels to Maryville Thursday, part of a three-game road swing.

Women's Basketball: The Greyhound, ranked No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY/ESPN D-II Coaches' Poll, women continued their hot streak over break, upping their record to a perfect 12-0.  The 12 wins out of the gate set a new program record for wins to start a season, breaking the 2007-08 squad's mark of 11.  UIndy added a feather to its cap with a convincing 80-52 over 12th-ranked and previously-undefeated Quincy Jan. 2.  Senior guard Jessica Canary amassed 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the contest, on the way to being named GLVC Player of the Week.  Indianapolis begins a three-game road trip this week, starting with Maryville Thursday night and Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon.

Swimming and Diving:  The Greyhound swimming and diving teams were inactive over the winter break, but will return to the pool Jan. 8, when they host the UIndy Invite at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.  The two-day event is slated to begin at 2:00 PM on Friday and will conclude on Saturday after a 10:00 a.m. start.  Both UIndy squads were ranked in the top 15 in the November 17th edition of the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Poll as the women were voted 11th and the men 15th.

Track and Field:  The Greyhound track and field trams officially opened their 2009-10 schedules Dec. 13 at the Robert Johnson Early Bird Invitational at Wabash College.  Though no team scores were kept, plenty of UIndy individuals won their respective events.  Female winners at the meet included Courtney Kuzmicz, who took titles in both the shotput and weight throw.  Asia Cammack won the 55-meter hurdles (9.44), then helped the 4x200 relay team to a first-place finish (1:54.14).  Krista Leffers won the high jump (5'0"), Kara Gill was the pole vault winner (9'6") and Valerie Wagner won the long jump (16'9.25") while Rachal Robertson (31'11.5") took the triple jump crown.  On the men's side, Michael Landy outdistanced the field in the mile run (4:35).  Courtny Cotten won the 55-meter hurdles (8.26) and the 4x200 relay was victorious (1:31.88).  The 4x400 relay finished in first with a 3:40.69 time. Randall Hudi won the long jump (22'9.25") and Matt Royer easily won the weight throw (58'1") to round out the winning performances for Indianapolis.  The teams are scheduled to compete at the Indiana Open this Saturday, held on the campus of Indiana University.

Wrestling:  The UIndy wrestling team completed the winter recess with a 3-1 dual meet record and finished with a strong fourth place showing at the 22 team Midwest Classic.  Head coach Jason Warthan picked up his first career victory as a pin by senior Lynn Panko gave the Hounds a dramatic 18-15 win over Trine on Dec. 17.  The Greyhound grapplers then headed north for the Purdue Duals on Dec. 20 earning a 32-15 win over Lakeland College in their opening session, falling 32-10 to the host Boilermakers in their second match, and rebounding with a 35-12 decision over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.  Indianapolis opened 2010 by hosting the Midwest Classic at Perry Meridian High School and placing seven individuals en route to their fourth place team finish.  Panko remained perfect on the season, earning a pair of pins and improving his 2009-10 record to 13-0 by capturing the 285-pound title.  Bryce Givens (157) and Alex Johns (125) each took third place honors in their respective brackets, while Jake Holler (165) placed fifth, Casey Kenney (133) and Cody Wittkamp (197) sixth, and David Lopez (149) seventh to round out the placements for the Greyhounds.  UIndy will return to the mats on Saturday at the Cincinnati Duals before coming home to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph in a dual meet on Jan. 13.
