ST. LOUIS, Mo.- After sprinting out a 14-0 lead, the third-ranked UIndy women's basketball team (14-0, 5-0 GLVC) orchestrated an 89-61 rout of Missouri-St. Louis at the Mark Twain Building Saturday.
Samantha Meissel poured in 33 points, while
Katie Lyons chipped in 17.
The Tritons (6-9, 2-4), who put up 78 points in their three-point win over perennial-GLVC-power Northern Kentucky two days earlier, struggled to get the offense going Saturday. UIndy held the home team scoreless for first six minutes of play, while racking up a 14-point advantage.
The Greyhounds' hot start marked its fifth double-digit, game-opening run of the season. Meissel scored nine of the Hounds' first 11 points before
Cayla Keegan capped the run with a 3-pointer.
Later, UIndy pushed the lead to a first-half-high 28 points with a 17-1 rally, as
Jessica Canary,
Katie Dewey and
Hillary Wenning all connected from distance.
UMSL's most successful stretch came in the final four minutes of the opening half, as the Tritons forced five UIndy turnovers while scoring 11 unanswered during that span.
The first-half score read 40-21 Greyhounds, as the visitors out-shot their hosts 54% to 28%. Meissel led all players at the break with 15 points.
The opponents traded buckets through the early going of the second half, but after a lay-up from Lyons with 16:34 to go made it 50-29, the Hounds led by at least 21 the rest of the way. The deficit topped-out at 30 with 3:43 remaining when Lyons hit a pair of free throws.
After an efficient-shooting first half, UIndy shot even better in the second, sinking 16-of-27 attempts for 59%. Meissel missed just four of her 16 shots on the way to her second straight 30-point game, as the 6-2 forward went for 33 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Lyons (17 pts) and Canary (13 pts) joined Meissel in double figures, while Dewey and Canary combined for 19 assists and eight steals. Dewey's 10 dimes fell one short of her career high.
UIndy remains on the road when it travels to Louisville, Ky. to face Bellarmine Thursday, Jan. 14, before coming back the Nicoson Hall for a Saturday evening game versus Lewis.
Notes: The Hounds have led or have been tied with its opponent for all but 17 seconds of the last 191:56 of play…UIndy's win extends its program record for wins to start a season to 14 (11-0, 2007-08)…The Greyhounds have made more free throws than their opponents have attempted in six straight games.
