Werner inks deal with Padres

Former Greyhound pitching standout Andrew Werner agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres Wednesday.  The undrafted free agent will report to the Padres' spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., this February before possibly being assigned to an affiliate.

The 6-2, 205-pound lefty impressed at an invitation-only tryout camp last weekend in Peoria.  One of 31 invitees, Werner pitched to a total of nine batters over two days and on Sunday, was offered a contract.

Splitting time between a pair of Frontier League teams in 2010, Werner appeared in 21 games last summer, making 20 combined starts for the Evansville Otters and the Windy City Thunderbolts.  He went 11-6 on the year, compiling a 3.47 ERA and striking out 106 batters in 127 innings.  HIs 11 wins were good for second in the league.

Werner led a stellar Greyhounds' pitching staff in strikeouts back in 2009, helping set a new team record of 516 total Ks on the season.  He K'd 99 batters in 88.2 innings while compiling a 3.15 ERA and a 7-2 record.  The Hounds went 43-21 that season, losing in the finals of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
