NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The 10th-ranked UIndy women's basketball team (2-0) traveled nearly 1,000 miles to get a win Friday night, as the Greyhounds defeated Shepherd, 82-71, at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic. The annual four-team event is being hosted by Merrimack College, a Boston-area institution.
Senior
Samantha Meissel notched for first 30-game of the season and sixth of her career, amassing 30 points on 10-for-15 shooting, but UIndy also got a lift from freshman point guard
Katy McIntosh (pictured). Just two games into her collegiate career, McIntosh went for 15 points, boosted by a perfect 7-for-7 performance at the foul line.
UIndy's lead got as high as 21 late in the first half before settling at 18 at the break, but the Rams (1-1) slowly went to work on the deficit in the latter period.
A 10-2 run by Shepherd midway through the second half made it 58-50 Greyhounds, and later, with five minutes left, a 15-2 spurt gave the Rams a one-point lead.
From that point, McIntosh helped shift the momentum by scoring nine of her points in the final moments. The Austin, Ind., native hit five free throws and two layups down the stretch, including a conventional three-point play, to help hold of the resilient Rams.
Uindy built its initial lead by shooting nearly 56 percent in the first half. Meissel accounted for 19 points in the first 20 minutes.
The teams combined for 52 turnovers in the game, with 30 coming from Shepherd.
The Classic continues tomorrow with the consolation and championship games. UIndy awaits the winner of the Merrick/Slippery Rock game later tonight. Today's winners face off at 3 p.m. Saturday.
